Zen meditation?

I’ve had a couple people tell me I should try zen meditation. I found a class, but was just wondering…. what really is it? What are the benefits? Why practice it?

It calms the mind. Relieves stress. Allows for better concentration in life.

If you are a student of religion, or a person who wants to become more ‘settled, calm’ then Zen meditation is something you SHOULD try. Zen meditation is not just sitting cross legged, staring off into space, with a ‘blank’ mind. It involves ‘thinking about’ or ‘pondering’ Zen koans (What is the sound of one hand clapping? is a Zen koan) and ‘growing’ from that contemplation. TRY IT. Who knows what YOUR benefits will be? ONLY YOU, and you WON’T know them, if you don’t give it a try. REALLY.

“ZEN” is the mystical teachings of Buddha ism. Zen has wonderful things to offer believers but if you are only looking for meditation without religion, it would be better to go for “trancendental meditation”, sometimes simply called “tm”

Pluss.. you have nothing to loose in trying .. and all the more to gain. You’ll gain knowledge in the subject and broaden your horizons .. even if you end up disliking it.


Zen is very simple. Zen is very profound. Zen is nothing special. Zen is the most valuable thing in all the world.
It really is all those things.
The word “zen” just means “meditation.” It’s a meditation school within Buddhism, arising in China and spreading to Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. To really practice Zen, it helps a great deal to have a teacher and a community. There are few things more life-enhancing than an intensive Zen retreat (say, seven days of silent practice in a Zen center) — such an opportunity is a really amazing experience.
As for “why practice it” — it helps us get fundamental. It helps us get back in touch with things that are truly meaningful. It helps us “wake up” our hearts to what is matter-of-factly more important and precious than what most of us most of the time get caught up in and distracted by.
To be a bit dramatic about it, a practice like Zen can be the thing that helps you live life with the kind of gratitude and wonder that someone might have when they have just survived nearly being killed.
