Would space probe costs be better spent developing new energy sources on Earth?

Oil is increasingly scarce and finite. We depend on it for production and transport of food, and on personal transport that makes modern cities possible. Coal and other fossil fuels are destroying Earth’s life-support systems. Isn’t this where we’ll have to live, if we survive?

  1. Fusion reactor technology is a clean source of energy but fusion reactor technology is still in the theoretical/prototype stages, however the moon has lots of Helium3 and that would make a good source of fissionable material for the reactors, the are a number of universities doing fusion experiments, and a while ago cold fusion was pulled out of mothballs by the U.S. Navy and peer reviewed by the United States Department of Energy and has been reconsidered as a clean energy source, also space travel would be essential for going to the moon and getting Helium3.

  2. Since our Sun will always be getting hotter and hotter, solar energy is the cleanest and most efficient energy source of the future. Burning fossil fuels creates all the problems on Earth simply because the 2 primary products of combustion are water vapor and CO2. This is also true of forest fires, fires caused by lightening, arson, chemical explosions, fireworks, explosives etc. In other words, any combustion process adds more water vapor and CO2 to the atmosphere. So the sea levels are rising, water mains are breaking and natural disasters are increasing. Also, all creatures (squirrels, gerbils, hamsters, lorises, lemurs, etc.) which respire aerobically give off water vapor and CO2 as the 2 primary byproducts of aerobic respiration:
    Combustion:
    C3H8 + 5 O2 –> 3 CO2 + 4 H2O
    Aerobic Respiration:
    C6H12O6 + oxygen –> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy
If anything, we have to start making the 160+ moons in our solar system habitable. Write to your space agency to transport drinking water, supplies and equipment to all of the moons. Terraforming and bioforming is a time consuming process and we have to start at some point. Bioforming is a new concept of using mammals to create a rich and thick atmosphere over time since they give off water vapor, CO2 and methane gas. As they say, don’t wait til you’re thirsty to start digging a well, cause you might not make it.
