Will the people participating in Earth Hour actually save any money?

I am going to try and get my family to do it. I don’t know if I’ll succeed, but hey, it’s worth a shot.
-Will my family and other families alike save any money from participating in Earth Hour?
-How much energy will all of the shut-down landmarks and homes across the world save during Earth Hour?
Thanks.
I sure hope I put this in the right category.

  1. I just found out about earth hour because my company sent an email to everyone.. my company employs over 170,000 people worldwide. It’s a symbolic gesture geared toward making people more aware of how their small contribution toward saving energy will positively affect the environment. I think it is a great idea.

  2. Will you save money? a little. not a whole lot, one hour is a very small percentage of your total billable usage time.
But that really isn’t the point.
As for total energy saving, I don’t know off hand what the numbers are for global energy consumption of electricity, but the cumulative effects of very large numbers of temporarily stopping electricity consumption will be a very large number.
Of course, really huge numbers are involved in global energy consumption, and not just very large numbers like the savings one hour of shutdown will give. But again, that really isn’t the point. More a case of, do you really need to be using all that stuff that you use all the time? Because if we all cut back a little every day, THEN there would be HUGE numbers in the energy reduction.

  3. Divide your electric bill by 744. If you also turn off your fridge, unplug all your devices, that is how much money you will potentially save.

  4. Of course you will save because your electric consumption will drop, but I do not believe it actually save any carbon emissions because the grid cannot decrease production for 1 hour, all the production I believe will remain the same, therefore not changing our carbon footprint.
