Wiccans/Pagans: I feel like being nocturnal, and I'm drawn to the Greek Goddess of the night, Nyx?

Merry meet,
So, I’m 13, and I’ve always felt drawn to the night. The sun annoys me. I like cloudy days better than sunny ones (the only exception is if I’m at the beach)…But yeah. My friends think it’s kind of weird and so do I (so I’m starting to think it’s a spiritual thing). Over the summer I’m probably gonna become nocturnal or at least half nocturnal…
And when I get a job when I’m older I’m going to get a night shift.
Anyways, my love for the night is making me want to worship the Goddess Nyx. (I’m studying Wicca right now so I’m thinking having Nyx as my matron and Erebus as patron)…So any advice on this?
P.S. Please no one preaching to me unless it’s pagan ministering…because IT WILL NOT CHANGE MY MIND. (I apologize for the caps, but it seems I can’t get my point across to some people).
Thank you and blessed be.

      • I agree with you, I really do not like the sun (even at the beach), and I’m thinking on becoming a Wiccan/pagan myself so is the rituals in the books house of night real?

    • Nyx is the ancient Greek name for the Goddess of the night, Romans called her “Nox,” I believe. At any rate I’m more of a Druidic pagan(all goddesses are one goddess, all gods are one god) and I think that there’s no harm in picturing Nyx during your prayers or meditations or spell-work. In fact; she’s often easier for me to focus on than Arthemis or any other incarnation of The Goddess. I had the whole “want to sleep in super late and stay up all night” thing going on when I was a teenager, too; I can tell you as a college student now though that it gets harder to keep that schdule and be successful as you get older, haha!

  1. I can relate to you. I love the night, too.
Well, think about patrons. Remember, Wicca is a religion of balance and fertility, and I think you completed the fertility part since these two had children (I remember they were married and had children), but the balance needs working on (Nyx was the goddess of night, Erebus the god of darkness). Don’t name your patrons so fast. They will find you soon enough.
My patron goddess is Artemis (Don’t know if that’s relevant).
    Blessed be, Angel 🙂

  2. You actually sound as if you have a disorder known as S.A.D. or Seasonal Affected Disorder. Where you are dramatically being effected by the weather, seasons, day light, etc.
That’s the first part of my answer. Now to the core of your question…. I’ve been Nocturnal for most of my life too. And getting the mind, body, friends and family to accept it is a total challenge. Be sure to take Vitamin D supplements though. As your body won’t be producing enough without proper exposure to daylight. Drink some extra milk and dairy products at night and that may be enough.
Other wise, join us who come alive and awake at night… side note; There is nothing more Spiritual for me, then watching the light drain from the sky and the world becomes drenched in Eternal Darkness…. Didn’t you know that the official start of every new day is at 12:01 midnight!… while it is still dark!

  3. Wicca worships gods of the British Isles, Lord and Lady of the Wica. So what you’re into isn’t Wicca 😉 I recommend looking into Hellenismos for ideas and information on the Greek deities and Greek worship. I’m sure there are Homeric or Orphic Hymns to Nyx around somewhere, and I highly recommend reading the vast amount of lore available to Hellenic Pagans. Take a jump off from the Theoi Project and go from there.
“Matron” doesn’t mean what you think it means. “Patron” is the appropriate word whether one’s deity is male or female. A patron isn’t someone you choose, it’s a god who chooses you to be in service to them. Having two is not particularly common. It actually sounds like it would be tiring so I wouldn’t recommend it.
As an aside, remember that Wicca is a fertility religion. If you’re taking your bare-bones ritual framework from Wicca, know that the roles you’re placing gods into are ones of lovers. Often this is very inappropriate so you should think carefully before doing this. I highly recommend looking into how Nyx was honoured historically and how Greek ritual works. There’s all this stuff about Miasma and so on that’s terribly important to acknowledge.
Read read read! Read the lore and read about Hellenic rites. Approach the goddess humbly and with an appropriate offering. Start with the link below. It has every primary source’s information about Nyx.

  4. Your preference for night isn’t uncommon for teens and is something you will likely grow out of. I too was one who was a night owl in my younger years and could sleep all day – I’m totally the opposite now. As much as I still like the night, many nights I can’t stay awake past 11 and I wake up with the early morning sun ready for the day.
My advice on patron gods is not to be in a rush feeling you have to name them. Your patrons will choose you when the time is right. You could certainly pay tribute to particular gods/esses you have an affinity for though, but keep learning all the mythology you can so that you will be better able to recognize the call of patrons who may choose you. And don’t just focus on one aspect (such as night without day). Wiccans celebrate the seasonal cycles of the year and strives to live in harmony with the natural cycles of the earth. Just keep studying. You have much to learn.

  5. Some people are naturally nocturnal. It is not a thing of religion or spirituality or anything. It is just the way we are. I myself is a Christian and a naturally nocturnal person and I have only discovered it when I was in high school. I am more alert during the night, I also eat more food and my senses are a lot keener during those times. Now that I am working, I always make sure that I get the graveyard shift and so as my boss because he noticed that I am a lot more productive during the night.
But of course be sure that you really are naturally nocturnal before you try to change your daily lifestyle.

  6. i also love the night i wanted to find out how to worship nyx because not many things tell you how to . if you could help me please do although this was a question u asked im asking u for help

  7. Merry meet! I have been intrested in wicca for about 10 years and have worshiped Gia and Nyx for most of this time. My problem is that thier is no one in my area that i have found who worship my Goddess’ also. So i have had to make my rituals work as best i can with my only guidence as the Goddess’ themselves, and the few books i have managed to find who actully print the rituals. I would like to meet with others who worship the Goddess’ and i would also like to learn more about my Goddess as i feel particuly drawn to Nyx. If anyone would like to get in contact please find me on facebook or e-mail me.

  9. For the people commenting about the House of Night series, i think thats rude. Nyx is a real goddess and people are really nocturnal. Making a fake connection between them is rude to the person who is finding their path.
Blessed be, and good luck on your path to finding Nyx!

    • Merry Meet, some (most) people are drawn to the energies of the day, and some to the energies of the night, this is completely natural, just as day and night is natural. Perhaps what some people have said here are right, that you will grow out of it, or perhaps this will simply draw you in to delve in further. We must all walk our own path and go where we feel drawn to on the journey of self-discovery. I too, am the same, having always felt drawn to the night, like there is something tangible calling to me. Being one of the nightkind is often a misunderstood spiritual path, and we are in the minority. It took me a while to learn what was missing from my life. I have recently found books which have aided me, however I am still also searching for more information. It is “The Nocturnal Witch Collection” by Konstaninos containing two books “Nocturnal Witchcraft” and Gothic Grimoire with good information to get you started on this path. If you look on amazon (the first book: http://www.amazon.com/Nocturnal-Witchcraft-Magick-After-Dark/dp/0738701661 ) you can view some pages. Good luck on your path, may you find your answers, we nightkind need to help each other out as we are a minority, remember to ask Goddess Nyx and your divine angels and guides for all the study you need, they will surely bring you the resources required. Please email me if you want any further help. Blessed Be.

  10. Merry meet!
I am much older than you and i am also trying to find my way into wiccan beliefs and i understand how confusing all the research can be. I agree with Velvet Cobweb and suggest you continue to do all the research you can and that you take in all that you believe to be true. From everyone i know and everything i have learned my self, being wicca is to be as true to nature and your true self as possible. Calling upon many gods/goddess during rites and circles is a great idea because they can help you reach your power. just remember to always make sure you are not manipulating or hurting anyone (including yourself) in your intent. I wish you the best.
Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again!
    Blessed Be.

    • I am trying to find more on Nyx. I wish to learn more about her. I wish to worship her but I am unsure what steps to take or what is the truth about her. Thank you so much. Even if you can or can not help me.

    • I need some information on some of the different types of rituals that people perform. I have been looking into the goddess Nyx and lately I havent been able to find any information regarding to her. I would greatly appreciate it if you helped me. Most thanks and Blessed Be!

  11. Hi im a wiccan and i too worship nyx and erebus you should join a daughters of nyx group im in a son of erebus group and its better then been on ur own u can really connect with her and worship her propally

  12. look i to am pagan and i know how you feel. im 13 and i have only just become a worshipper of nyx. she is a loving goddess who loves us all. i too have always preffered the night so i know how it feels when others treat you like your an outsier because of your belifes. hope it helps. merry meet merry part and merry meet again. blessed be.
p.s please dont asume the religion if you found out throught the house of night, do our reaserch first then find your path. good luck.

  13. I agree with kida I did when I was 16 now I’m 18 n I still follow the Goddess, I have read many books on different religions n I find this to be the only that I find loving n I’m male n want to be a warrior n find the girl of my dreams, i only see that happiness with the Goddess Nyx
    Blessed Be!

  14. I’m 14, I’d just like to say, I am starting to worship Nyx. And yes, the house of night novels inspired my first thought of becoming a Nyx worshipper, but I have been doing research into it. It’s gonna be difficult for me, because my parents are strictly athiest and don’t believe in any gods, but I’m sure they will be understanding. And can I ask, is ‘Merry meet’ a real saying for Nyx worshippers, or just something made up in the house of night novels? I believe this is the right path for me, as I have always felt more comfortable at night, and shy away from the sun. It will be difficult, I know, but I’m gonna try stick to this path.
    Blessed Be.

    • I am not sure whether “Merry meet” is a proper true phrase said by Nyx but because of the House Of Night novels it has become well known by our kind. I have also just begun to worship Nyx and my thoughts on doing this also started by those novels. I suppose we are kinda the same, except my parents wouldn’t be so understanding. If my parents ever saw me worship Nyx they would go crazy cuz on my mums side they are christian and my dads they are athiest (my parents are divorced). Um…..can I ask whether u or anyone else feels completely calm at night and is able to focus a lot more at night. Because everything feels so serene?
Also I think we should have our own version of the Bible, which would make life so much easier. But in a way I’m glad we don’t because the descovery of new parts of our religion is what makes it so mysterious, just like Nyx and the night.
      Well, thats all for now.
Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.
      Blessed be.

    • P.S. I found out about Nyx throught the House of Night but I did proper research on her, and didn’t just follow wat the books say.

  15. Merry meet, You may call me Gwen. I have also been very… different at night. I too want to worship nyx and be public about and start a coven of “our” own. But I have to keep quiet about it. my mom is strictly christian and wouldnt even let me be a witch for halloween. PS Im 13. If anyone feels the same please email. If not, then dont be rude about my beliefs. PS how do u become wiccan?? please help!!!
Merry meet merry part and merry meet again!

  16. Merry Meet…
Hi guys. I feel… Awful. Anyone I try to tell about my worship of the goddess Nyx just laughs. They seem to think it’s just a joke, or that it’s a short phase. I haven’t told my parents yet… But I’ve been really grumpy. I haven’t been able to sleep at night, I’m really tired in the day, and I’ve been so irritable even my cat has been keeping her distance. Me and my mum had a row because I went and sat on my swing in my back garden in the middle of the night… I just couldn’t stand being cooped up inside!! My parents also seem to think I’ve been secretly drinking alcohol, coz I’ve been getting really bad headaches during the day, especially if it’s really sunny. My dad thinks I’m mad because I went and sat out in a thunderstorm, so, yeah… Utter chaos… Ugh…
    Blessed Be.

  17. Your patron deity chooses you. Although it’s not uncommon to have two deities, most either have a patron god or goddess but not both. Remember that meditation is a good way of finding out which patron deity chooses you. My patron goddess found me not only in meditation but also by reading about her as well. I worship Oshun, the goddess of rivers, love, beauty, and wealth.
I recommend taking time getting to know your patron deity before you worship them.

  18. If you truly want to dedicate yourself to Nyx, then you first have to know that the “House Of Night” series has got it all wrong.
Erebus has almost next to zero contact with Nyx in the mythological world. And Nyx is almost completely THEBEN, not greek. For a child with next to no past history on this subject to attempt to dedicate herself to a goddess of death, is beyond me.
All I can tell you is that this would be a really bad idea for you to continue worshipping a goddess you know almost nothing about. Don’t piss of the gods, and you’ll be fine.

  19. I’m 15 and been interested in Wicca but my parents dont know and I don’t think they’ll like it. I’ve been attracted to the night and the goddess Nyx for a while. I started learning about Wicca a while ago but dropped it for a little but just couldn’t stay away from it. No one know about it but me and my friend but she dropped it. I need some advice and how to learn more about it. Please e-mail me if u u could help.

  20. I need some information on some of the different types of rituals that people perform. I have been looking into the goddess Nyx and lately I havent been able to find any information regarding to her. I would greatly appreciate it if you helped me. Most thanks and Blessed Be!

  21. I am 14 and have been worshipping Nyx as my Goddess for about a year now. My sister and I are both Pagans and would love to learn more. We both have conducted Full Moon Rituals and have connections to the elements. For example mine is Water. I also feel the need to state that for you non-believers you shouldnt descriminate other religions just because you dont believe. You should be open to other peoples views.
If you would like to contact me or my sister please email me. We would love to learn more. Blessed be.

  22. I’m 15 and been interested in Wicca but my mom doesn’t know and I don’t know how to tell. I found out about Nyx in the 7 th grade when I did a project on her and connected her to my love of night in the summers I sit on my roof and lay under the star more so during full moons and in the winter I always gaze out my open window at night. Just to closer if that even makes since . I want to start to follow the path to Nyx but I really don’t know how so if you could email me and help as much as you can I would be so grateful.

  23. Hello, I’m Spark RavenHawk and I’ve been training in Wicca for the last few months and I found this post rathing interesting, because I have always found the night kind of soothing and peaceful and have been sort of drawn to it. I have also chosen to take Nyx on as one of my Gods/Goddesses for my Greek Pantheon. The other ones I chose were:
    -Apollo (Prophesy, Archery and Music)
    -Athena (War and Wisdom)
    -Ares (War)
    -Nike (Victory)
    -Tyche (Luck) AND OF COURSE
    -Nyx (Night/Darkness)
I am in no way a Dark Mage (I always preferred the term Mage) but having the ability to be less noticeable as so I can enjoy the night’s peacefulness cant be a bad thing can it? Good Luck on your Wiccan journey
    Merry Meet and Merry Part
    -Spark RavenHawk

  24. My magickal name is Nyx–I’m 31 and have been a pagan since I was in 7th grade. I have no idea what this House of Night series is, but from what I’ve seen of it, it sounds in no way connected to the reality of the Nyx I have worshiped. Nyx is one of the most ancient, primordial deities–the personification of night. To those on here who say Nyx had little to do with Erebus–think again. In most myths she is either her son/lover/brother. Do you research kiddies, and don’t take everything you read at face value–just because it’s in print, doesn’t make it true. She had MANY offspring, some through parthenogenesis, some with other deities. To the person who said Wicca is strictly about worshipping the gods of the British Isles–think again. Wicca is a very broad term–though not as broad a term as “Pagan”. There are many different forms of Wicca–again, do your research kiddies. Nyx is, like all primordial deites, neither good or evil, but rather sometimes helpful, sometimes harmful depending on her mood and your actions. My advice to all you young seekers is to read, read, and read some more. Go to the local bookstore and start reading in the new age/occult section. check out a website called witchvox.com, for a lot of good info. blessed be!

    • I have read the house of night series and I agree that it misrepresents Nyx, however the books are what sparked my interest in Wiccan and Pagan beliefs, I too feel a strong connection and I am drawn to the power of night. I am glad to have been able to research further into these matters and Id be grateful if you (or anyone else) could recommend any specific books, websites or anything else that they found helpful in the field of research and allowed them to explore their beliefs further.
      Blessed be.

  25. I too have a connection to the night, one of the ways know that is because I get sent important messages about the future of me and everyone around me in my dreams. I am only 13 but I figured out my dreams at the age of 9. After this I started feeling drawn to the full moon and so started researching. This was when I found Nyx and soon began worshiping.
However I was brought up as a Christian in the salvation army and if my family ever found out they would FREAK!! I don’t know what I should tell them! I refuse to worship anyone but Nyx and her consort Erebus. My mum has already sniffed out my worshiping candles and my notebook of research. But Nyx is my goddess forever, no matter what

  26. Okay.I’m 19 have been worshipping nyx, erebus, the three fates clothos, lachesis, atropus, anubis, hecate,Eros, and morrigan for nearly 6 years.I am a psychic vampyre and follow the black veil penned by Michelle belanger.a good book to read in order to understand what it means to be night kind is the nocturnal witchcraft bundle by konstantinos.I did get my first taste of nyx following the first book marked.and have realized pc cast got a lot of inspiration from the actual myths.if you worship nyx or erebus or any deity that’s intoned to the night you Need to know which herbs, and candles to have as well as what to understand.no god will appear out of nowhere, and you have to realize that they talk to you through messages and signs.I have begun a house known as house ankherebus or house of the living shadows on Facebook look it up.I know a heathen, and an otherkin.if you want more info go to that Facebook page and like it.as above so below.if it is good so mote it be merry meet part and merry meet again.

    • I too have felt drawn too thee night and have chosen my goddess as nix recently…. But I don’t know how or if I can become nocturnal though. I have even chosen my Wiccan name as Cresent because of the moon connecting to the night kinda like Cresent moon. But just Cresent. Eurbus will also be my pattern. I’ve been reading this book and I know it’s not real. But it tells me about Nyx and it’s the house of night series. And I learned that Vampyres are really just well… Witches…. I hope you guys have some advice for me.
Ps. Is Nefert a real goddes

  27. Its funny because this is a reply many years later, and I wonder if you actually went for it and became a Wiccan and began to worship Nyx? I have always had a deep fascination of gods and goddesses since I was possibly in 2nd grade. So of course I had heard of Nyx before this House of Night series (which has gotten bad reviews for not being completely true as far as information). I’m not entirely sure if I want to be Wiccan, but am considering and will continue to research. Nyx was originally a Greek goddess (Nox in her Roman form), but then again there was the earlier Egyptian “Nut” (pronounced Noot) of which Nyx is apparently based on. She is not a particular goddess really, she is a Protgonoi, or a personification of the Night, but she is way more than that. She is neither good or evil, she had many children with Erebus (her partner and her brother) and some by herself, or at least this is what greek mythology had it put out. Do as you please.

  28. Merry meet.
I too have a connection with the night. I just recently have chosen my godess as nyx. And pattern eurbus. I dont know if I can or how to become nocturnal any advice. Do I have to become nocturnal to worship nyx? My Wiccan name is Cresent as in Cresent moon but just cresent. Any advice.
Are vampires or vampyers just night witches.
    Is neferet a real goddess
Merry meet, Merry part, Merry meet again.
