Though Wicca can be a very fluid and personal religion, don’t get the wrong impression that ‘anything goes’.
The Wiccan religion was created in the 50s by Gerald Gardner and is largely based on solomonic ceremonial magick. He and some other occultists got together and brought back what they believed to be ‘brushed under the carpet’ for centuries, Wicca They believed that they were making it known once again. Gerald was the first to create the first branch of Wicca, he called it “Wica” derived from the old English word meaning “wise one” Gardnerians commonly refer to themselves as “The Wicca/Wica” There is some propaganda going around that “Wicca” came from the word meaning “to bend” that wicca is a twisting of reality. I do not believe this. There is some controversy on whether or not the word wica pertains to the use of witchcraft bending or twisting outcomes of the witch.
We Wiccans believe that everything is related and intertwined with each other.
We worship a deity of both a God and Goddess we believe that they are so universally related to everyone that they are too big to fit into just one religion, we believe that everyone is correct in their beliefs, as long as it is for good. We believe that the God and Goddess are just two different aspects of a greater being; some choose to believe that they can take form of any thing (My beliefs). Some believe that they are just different forces acting in different ways to help and teach. Some believe that there are many God/desses; others believe in the god and goddess, all of the other god and goddesses are just aspects. Wiccans usually don’t believe that the God and Goddess are apart from us so we usually don’t have a concept of being saved; we believe that the God and Goddess are in us all.
We believe that everything happens for a reason, we believe in the rule of three (karma) that whatever we send out returns to us three fold whether it be good or bad.
It means what you put out is what you get back times three. So if you put out negative energy – it would come back to you three times as bad. If you put out positive energy – it would come back to you three times as good. We understand that sometimes it may comeback when ever we least expect it or it may come back to when we do. We know that it will in some way, when you are good to others it will be repaid to you.
Wiccans do not usually have a church; we create our own sacred space commonly called a circle. We believe that this keeps our own energy in and also keeps unwelcome energy out. This very convenient to us, we can cast it anywhere at anytime, day or night. Wiccans do gather in covens – The media has made this sound more sinister than it really is. A coven can be any number of people (not just 13), and involves a group of Wiccans who gather regularly for ritual, magick, study and celebration.
. It’s not that mysterious at all. Many Wiccans are not part of any coven, and folks who work alone are called ‘solitaries’ (This is what I am).
We don’t necessarily worship the Earth, but we do hold it sacred, and celebrate the cycles and the seasons, as well as the traditional harvest days. We celebrate the Wheel of The Year:
Imbolic falls on Feb. 2.
Ostara, the Spring Equinox (when the day and night are equal, usually around March 21),
Beltane (May 1)
Litha, the Summer Solstice (around June 21)
Lughnasad (Aug. 1) Also spelled Lughnassad and referred to as Lammas.
Mabon, the Fall Equinox (around Sept. 21)
Samhain(Sow-win, Oct. 31), Witches’ New Year
We do cast spells, they are much like prayer to Christians we try not to harm people, Magick and spells are part of our religion. This sometimes seems far-fetched to those who don’t understand. Forget every magick spell you’ve ever seen on TV or in the movies.
Magick is nothing more than utilizing the energy that exists around us in nature. It’s a delicate art that takes time, study and practice to master. We don’t spend our days casting spells willy-nilly. We follow the Rede of the wiccae. Not all, but most do including myself.
Originally Written by Gwen Thompson and comes from the NECTW which is an American group. However there is some controversy on whether or not the Wiccan rede was originally written by Gerald Gardner or not. It was not. The full poem as published by Thompson is as follows.
Rede Of The Wiccae
Being known as the counsel of the Wise Ones:
Bide the Wiccan Laws ye must In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.
Live an’ let live – Fairly take an’ fairly give.
Cast the Circle thrice about To keep all evil spirits out.
To bind the spell every time – Let the spell be spake in rhyme.
Soft of eye an’ light of touch – Speak little, listen much.
Deosil go by the waxing Moon – Sing and dance the Wiccan rune.
Widdershins go when the Moon doth wane, An’ the Werewolf howls by the dread Wolfsbane.
When the Lady’s Moon is new, Kiss thy hand to Her times two.
When the Moon rides at Her peak Then your heart’s desire seek.
Heed the Northwind’s mighty gale – Lock the door and drop the sail.
When the wind comes from the South, Love will kiss thee on the mouth.
When the wind blows from the East, Expect the new and set the feast.
When the West wind blows o’er thee, Departed spirits restless be.
Nine woods in the Cauldron go – Burn them quick an’ burn them slow.
Elder be ye Lady’s tree – Burn it not or cursed ye’ll be.
When the Wheel begins to turn – Let the Beltane fires burn.
When the Wheel has turned a Yule, Light the Log an’ let Pan rule.
Heed ye flower bush an’ tree – By the Lady Blessèd Be.
Where the rippling waters go Cast a stone an’ truth ye’ll know.
When ye have need, Hearken not to others greed.
With the fool no season spend Or be counted as his friend.
Merry meet an’ merry part – Bright the cheeks an’ warm the heart.
Mind the Threefold Law ye should – Three times bad an’ three times good.
When misfortune is enow, Wear the Blue Star on thy brow.
True in love ever be Unless thy lover’s false to thee.
Eight words ye Wiccan Rede fulfill – An’ it harm none, Do what ye will.
Wiccans worship Satan – The figure of Satan is part of the Christian mythos, and those of us who do not follow Christianity, do not accept the existence of this character.
Wiccans engage in ritual orgies – This misconception may have arisen from the practice of doing ritual in the nude. Not all Wiccans practice this way, and there is nothing sexual about it.
Wicca is only for women – Wicca has attracted a great number of women because of the focus on the Goddess. But Wicca is open to everyone, male or female.
Wicca has no rules – This little untruth is often used by our detractors to show that we must live wild and unrestrained lives. We may not have books of commandments to bind our lives, but most Wiccans do follow one single law: Harm None. Those two words have as much power as an entire book of rules.
Wiccans cast spells and hexes to control people –
If we really did this, Wiccans would all be wealthy and we would not suffer from discrimination. We believe that for every action, there is a re-action, and that includes using magick for negative manner. Wiccans don’t believe in a punishing God, but we do think that bad actions will come back and bite us in the butt.
Wicca is a cult that is trying to recruit people – Wiccans believe that each individual’s path of spirituality is valid, and no one path is better than any other. We do not convert or recruit anyone. Proselytizing is not a practice we follow.
