It depends on the Wiccan.
To me, it’s real
BTW, not all Wiccans are witches and not all witches are Wiccan

Nightwind: Adipose says Hi!

I would say it is both. I would also like to stress that when I speak of magic I am not speaking of the cutsy spells various people on Y!A insist Wiccans can work 😉

My ex partner was/is Wicca and she believed she had power to cast spells. She had no more power than the ant walking across my desk.

Magic, real magic, is subtle. And not all Wiccans use magic. Or if they do, (and I am not saying all do this) it only on occasion. Magic is not like in movies or on TV shows, that is what is called Special effects, or FX. Hope this helps.

I’m not a wiccan nor am I a Lavey Satanist.
But magick as far as Aleister Crowley and my Sinagogue of Satan is very real. Feel free to join us on Friday nights at 8 pm pacific time for the “Invocation of the Bornless one” Crowley’s favorite ritual. I perform it on audio and video in our chat room. I’m rather well known as a Goetic magician in the Ordo Templi Orientis of which I was a member for over 20 years. I still love em I just out grew them.

I am not a Wiccan, but may I answer? I am an atheistic Thelemite.
In my view, it is a set of psycho-spiritual activities that are designed to do the following:
1.) Aid me in discovering my true Will
2.) Allowing my mind to more easily grasp my true Will
3.) Allowing aspects of my personality that are developed come to the forefront of my conciousness in accordance with my true Will
4.) To help me perceive specific parts of my surroundings better. [The body of Nuit]
All of this relates to Aleister Crowley’s supposed definition of “Magick,” but as my brain cannot grasp magick in the same fantastical sense as he could, it is psychological for me. I will not be so dogmatic as to say it is true for everyone else, but largely I feel that is how ritual functions to this Star.
Also, actions that are not ritual are magickal to me, insofar as I can draw3 personal meaning from them.

For me it is sort of both. Magic itself is literal for me (it’s the manipulation of energy for bringing about a result) but the way it is utilized is through psychological ritual. Though I do believe we raise energy and utilize it through ritual (and visualization mostly), according to my beliefs (and theories) it is our subconscious mind that does the work, so we need to employ psychological methods (that’s why we use specific tools like the athame – they hold symbolic meanings that affect the subconscious into working) to make it work.
Oh by the way: not all Wiccans are Witches and not all Witches are Wiccans.
