Why is Christianity "such a threat" in today's world?

Have you ever noticed that there is a MASSIVE anti-Jesus movement in this country? And that MANY rock and metal songs mock Christianity?
Yet, we don’t have any songs, etc. that mock Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Shamanism, etc? WHY IS THAT? If Christianity must be mocked, then why not mock EVERY religion, theoretically speaking, just to be fair? What makes Christianity so “threatening” and all OTHER religions “okay”? In other words, if God/Jesus is quote/unquote “not real”, then why feel SUCH THE NEED to “stamp him out” of today’s world and society?
Because, theoretically speaking, if he’s “not real”, then there’s no need to feel *threatened* by him, correct? Meaning, if he’s so-called “not real”, then people shouldn’t have to try to go overboard trying to “prove” to themselves and others that he’s not real. Because by going to extremes to try to prove Jesus ISN’T real, all the more convinces me, as a Christian, that he MUST be real if people are so threatened by him.
So that’s precisely my point………
If Jesus is not real to you, why go out of your way to hate him and mock him to no end? Wouldn’t it just be alot easier to be an atheist/etc. and just call it a day, as far as your “religious viewpoints” go, without further mocking the ones who DO think he’s real? What do you gain out of mocking Christianity? Seriously? Why not mock other religions too, while you’re at it? Because heck, if you’re not afraid to openly mock Christianity, you shouldn’t be openly afraid to mock other religions, either. Cause afterall, theoretically speaking, religion is “just religion”, right? Or IS it?
Or is it because, deep deep down, you don’t really know for sure if Jesus exists or not but you secretly envy the people that DO believe in his existence and so mock them (as well as Jesus) to try to make yourself feel better for not believing and to “erase” that feeling in the pit of your stomach that says “I just may go to hell for not believing”, yet, in your heart, secretly hate the people that you “know” aren’t going to hell (the believers?)
Please note: I’m not saying ALL non-Christians, atheists, those of another religion go out of their way to openly mock Christianity…..I’m just saying that of those who DO…..seem to be doing so for reasons other than what they claim. I think there’s a much deeper picture here that these folks aren’t admitting to themselves or others. Or is it just me?
But anyways, for all you non-believers and non-Christians out there that think I’m nuts, I personally challenge you to read the Gospel of John in the holy bible, chapters 1-21. Go ahead. I dare you to. If that doesn’t convince you that God/Jesus is real, then nothing will. So go ahead. Accept the challenge.
Thanks to all who answered, it’s greatly appreciated. I wasn’t try to attack anyone’s viewpoints per say, I was just wondering why it is that Christianity seems to be the ONLY religion that people openly mock, is all.

  1. attacks on roe vs wade,
    attack on darwins TOE,
    attacks on homsexuals,
    attacks on birth control,
what, how much more intrusive into NOYB can you be before I should get fed up with you folks???

  2. I think most people mock the christians not the christ. Not all christians, only the zealous, jealous wack jobs. The ones that tell you you are going to hell with a sanctimonious gleam in their eye. My favorite bumper-sticker reads ‘ dear jesus i have no problem with you, but some of your followers are a real pain in the as(s)’ You are wrong that only christians are mocked. muslims, jews, hare krishnas, scientology, mormons, the list goes on. You only are offended when christians are mocked. If you are consistant, you should feel offended when anyone is mocked. Word for the wise, when you start not acting pissy, those who want to shock you will stop trying to push your button because you will cease being amusing.
When we see multi millionare tv preachers telling their minions that god is punishing the evil cities with a hurricane. The cause was the city allowed gay people to have a marching parade. That kind of crap NEEDS to be mocked!
I am using “you” for anyone who would ask the same question. You are many people.

  3. it’s just people uncomfortable with the fact that a higher power is ruling over them. thus far, Christianity is the largest religion/faith in the world so it is the prime target for bureaucracy and all the other bad stuff

  4. here in america, christianity is applied to the government, and some christian views are illogical and absurd
    also, christians are just annoying
they believe shoving their opinions down other’s throats is what jesus wants them to do.
would you like it if i pressured you to believe in teh flying spaghetti monster all the time which you’re certain does not exist, and whenever you give me your opinion i scream at your face?

  5. Very good point
Christianity definitely is a threat to humanism, atheism, buddhism, islam, etc.
Exposing them for the false religions they are

  6. Christianity is the strongest religion, in the most powerful country therefore it could influence more peoples lives than any other whether they like it or not. I also don’t get anybody else but Christians banging on my door ‘wanting to save me’.
I’m against all religion, but Christianity is most in my face.

  7. As Christians we know why, Satan is on borrowed time. Why would he attack false religions. He has already deceived those people. I think some people are afraid of Islam. If you insult them they try to kill you. By the way, Islam is the fastest growing religion. If people think Christian is in your face, just wait until this religion is the main one.

  8. Yes we couldn’t possibly really think you’re a deluded idiot following the superstitions of Bronze Age goat-herders who thought demon possession caused cerebral palsy and the earth was a square table top on pillars. We really admire your intellect and command of reality and we’re determined to go to hell so we can fry like french fries in your god’s hell, so we are mocking your beliefs even though we know you have a solid grasp of the nature of the cosmos. Sure that makes sense.
Actually, sorry to break it to you, but I really do believe your religion is nonsense and you’re a brainwashed idiot. And BTW way, stamping out the nonsensical mythology you’ve built up around a dead man is not the same thing as stamping him out.
I challenge you to critically investigate your beliefs instead of simply telling us to accept what you yourself have never tested. Your lies are not harmless. You Christians have murdered and continue to murder people around the world for rejecting your delusions. Sure the Muslims are getting all the attention, but in Africa it’s Christians burning people as witches because they won’t pay the “pastors” for “deliverance” ceremonies. And it isn’t that long ago in human history that you were hanging people in this country as “witches.” False beliefs have consequences, and it isn’t Jesus who’s dangerous. He’s dead. You’re the one that requires close watching.

  9. Its because we don’t have a lot of Buddhists and other religions that are interfering in the day to day life of ordinary people in this country. Its christians that are constantly trying to get creationism into classrooms, roe v. wade overturned, etc. Once christians back off and mind their own business, they’ll get a lot more slack.
And I’ve read the bible in its entirety a number of times. I’m not convinced.

  10. It’s mainly left wingers that want to attack Christianity. Atheism is politically motivated, and you’re right about how they focus their attacks against Christianity. Islam is the fastest growing religion, and way more fanatical and extreme than Christianity is. Honestly, I suspect that many “atheists” are gays, Marxists, pro-choice people, and other lefties.

  11. “Or is it because, deep deep down, you don’t really know for sure if Jesus exists or not but you secretly envy the people that DO believe in his existence and so mock them (as well as Jesus) to try to make yourself feel better”
I’m sorry, but I find this argument bad to the point of embarrassingly bad.
I have never met an atheist or any “non-believer” who feared hell. Not one.
If they did, why would they call themselves non-believers in the first place? What motive do they have to pretend to reject Jesus if they actually, secretly, don’t feel that way?
That “logic” reminds me of the whole “gay people choose to be that way” argument. It’s one of the most illogical statements I’ve ever heard on this forum.

  12. Conservative Christians work hard at legislating their form of morality. Shove religion down my throat and you will get me pissed.

  13. Its not Jesus, It’s Christianity
Because in the United States the majority is Christian, so therefore that is the biggest religious threat.
    Why is it a threat?
Christians have been attempting to remove women’s rights
Christians have been attempting to put creation in public schools
Christians have been maintaining their removal of homosexual’s rights
    Etc.
I don’t want my children brought up in a world that is ruled by primitive ideas from a book of horribly violent, sexist, bigoted, offensive fairy tales
EDIT: About your challenge, I’ve read it before a few times and I’ll read it again. That is if you read a few books out of the old testament, and tell me why, even if real, you would want to serve the greatest literary evil of all time, God.

  14. I’m sorry, what? I think you just invented this all up.
In my country this stuff that you say is going on isn’t going on.
“But anyways, for all you non-believers and non-Christians out there that think I’m nuts, I personally challenge you to read the Gospel of John in the holy bible, chapters 1-21. ” —
Jews do not accept Jesus as the messiah because:
    1) Jesus did not fulfill the messianic prophecies.
    2) Jesus did not embody the personal qualifications of the Messiah.
    3) Biblical verses “referring” to Jesus are mistranslations.
    4) Jewish belief is based on national revelation
    http://judaism.about.com/library/3_askrabbi_o/bl_simmons_messiah3.htm
(Not everyone who is a “non-Christian” is an atheist.)
Jesus of Nazareth, if he even existed, was merely a man.
I will not worship him. Ever. Understand? I’ve read the Old and New Testament several times in several languages.
If you give me even just a little bit of evidence for any of the things you wrote, I’d be happy.
Little girl, I don’t care what you believe in. I want everyone to have the right of freedom of religion and freedom from religion.

  15. well because you are christian you don’t believe in the Muslim faith but you do fear the stereotype of a terrorist. yes ? can you see part of the problem ideas are more powerful than atomic bombs.
ill one up your change ill read the whole thing. oh what i already have and a lot of the crap that you don’t hear about that i acutely read is why i am a atheist now.

  16. I agree with you 100%.
It seems to me that they are looking for excuses not to believe. The more excuses they have–the better they feel. As the old adage goes “Strength in numbers” The more people that mock Christianity makes them feel that they are right, they aren’t alone in their feelings, and it helps them cope. I guess by mocking they don’t have to face reality.

  17. It’s pretty much the same reason it is more acceptable to be racist against white people, but you have to be more sensitive to black people….
Christians have not treated non-Christians very well in the past. Now there is a larger population of non-Christians who have had to fight for rights and acceptance.
Also, Christians continued to push… they fought it. They still fight for laws to reflect their beliefs rather than the majority’s. If anyone is going to push their faith in someone’s faith for so long, those others are eventually going to push back. You don’t often hear of Buddhists or Shamans going door to door to try and push their faith on people, or lobbying to get their prayers said in public arenas.
It’s not what Christians believe in that make people feel angry or threatened… it’s that Christians try so hard to impose their beliefs on others and on our secular laws.
I’d be concerned about any group that did that.
Basically, if Christians were a quiet people of faith that kept to themselves, no one would ever bother them. Christian evanalism started the pendulum swingin in one direction, and now it’s coming back from the other direction.
And I’ve read the Bible… at least twice through and several books much more than twice; 2 years of Bible study under a Pentacostal teacher. You should read the actual Jewish version and interpretation of the Torah, then you would see why Jesus couldn’t possibly qualify as the messiah. You should also read the mythology of the time to see how closely Christian beliefs and Bible stories reflect the popular stories of the time. And maybe a science book or two.

  18. Ok, I admit, I only skimmed much of your posting and also need to ask which country you mean when you say “in this country”? Certainly, where I live (not the US) there seems to be a move away from organized religion generally, but not one toward ‘Christian-bashing’ in particular (also, there are still many people practising religions of all denominations here).
That said, I don’t think people are ‘anti-Christian’ generally, but are more opposed to particular ‘my-way-or-the-highway-and-I’ll-ram-my-beliefs-down-everyone’s-throats’ brands of Christianity. In supposedly democratic countries, this type of “religious” practice (though it is really political, not religious) is especially irksome, no matter which religion is doing the ‘ramming down your throats’ part, as it tends take the power away from the people (where, in a democracy it belongs), and transfer to a small group of men who are manipulating the system, and their followers to their own advantages – ones that have nothing to do with God or faith (and it’s usually men – women tend to be suppressed in this type of ‘Christianity’).
For a really scary, but also hopeful read try “Resurrecting Eve” by Roberta Mary Pughe and Paula Anema Sohl. It addresses the tactics that the above ‘throat-ramming’ groups use to manipulate the system, and how, by extension women’s rights and personhood are diminished.
    Best wishes.

  19. It was prophesied long ago, my friend. And just like the gospel of John says, “men loved darkness rather than light.” These people’s minds have been seared by the doctrines of demons, they exchange and call what is good evil and what is evil good. They enjoy the praise of men more than the praise of God. They follow after their own lusts, and this is essentially what drives all of these anti-God/anti-Christian movements today. They do not want to acknowledge the existence of a Higher Being who has the authority to judge them and tell them they are in the wrong. They have gathered for themselves false teachers who scratch them behind the ears and tell them lies to appease their carnal appetites. Behold, these days were foretold long ago:
“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. For men will be LOVERS OF SELF, LOVERS OF MONEY, PROUD, ARROGANT, ABUSIVE, DISOBEDIENT TO THEIR PARENTS, UNGRATEFUL, UNHOLY, INHUMAN, IMPLACABLE, SLANDERERS, PROFLIGATES, FIERCE, HATERS OF GOOD, TREACHEROUS, RECKLESS, SWOLLEN WITH CONCEIT, LOVERS OF PLEASURE RATHER THAN LOVERS OF GOD, holding the FORM OF RELIGION BUT DENYING THE POWER OF IT. Avoid such people. For among them are those who make their way into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and swayed by various impulses, WHO WILL LISTEN TO ANYBODY AND CAN NEVER ARRIVE AT A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH.” (2 Timothy 3:1-7)

  20. Jesus is not the problem, Christians are. For the past quarter century we have witnessed the potential dangers that Christians pose to the world, from James Watts’ dismantling of the U.S. Interior Department in the Reagan administration (because Jesus was coming back any day) to the bizarre motivations of the “faith-based” Bush administration in its foreign policy, economic and environmental policies. We know that people who don’t take this life seriously and blame problems on demons and infidels can get us into a lot of trouble. Even the “Jesus” such “Christians” promote is unrecognizable from the one in the Bible, the one who takes the side of the poor and the dispossessed, not the affluent and influential.
The reason Christianity is most ridiculed is because it’s the biggest target and the biggest threat to public safety. I don’t know much about metal but I imagine it mocks Christianity because it’s so easy to see through and so easy to rile defensive Christians. The Christians most ready to shout “persecution” seem to be the ones with the greatest social advantages. Isn’t that ironic? The Christians who get their hands dirty and try to make a difference in the world, promoting social justice and relief, are practically invisible.
I’ve read the Bible. I understand the Bible and find a lot to admire in it. But I don’t recognize the Bible in the whining, griping face of triumphal Christianism. I truly wish a new “Jesus” would arise to condemn the self-serving hypocrisy of smug, clubbish, pharisaical “Christians”. But then, he’d just get killed again.

  21. Because your religion effects government legislation and impedes progress in scientific research.
Your superstitious beliefs prevent necessary and beneficial change.
I’ve read the Gospel of John. Ask yourself why it is so different from the synoptics. It doesn’t prove God, it proves how 100 years later an event can be turned into something unrecognizable.

  22. Other religions don’t get as much attention because they aren’t trying to convert everybody, aren’t trying to legislate their superstitions into law, aren’t running around telling everybody they’re going to hell if they don’t believe like they do, and aren’t trying to push absolutely false myths on school kids as “science.” If the christians were more like buddhists — live and let live, don’t push others around — nobody would bother you.
I have to wonder about your “interesting” logic — the more people show you that jesus is a myth, the more you believe he’s not. Kinda strange, don’t you think? Perhaps you might consider looking at some of the arguments they give showing he’s not real?
And no — I don’t secretly envy believers. I very openly (not secretly) feel sorry for them. They’ve been sold a pack of lies and have been convinced it’s truth. They get taught to accept ridiculous, provably-wrong things without any question, and that affects their ability to make rational decisions in all parts of their life. They waste their lives hoping for a “reward” (or scared of a “punishment”) that will never come. It’s quite sad. Still, if they’d keep to themselves, I wouldn’t bother them, and though I’d still feel sorry for them, I’d let them have their delusion with no comment.
Oh, and no — the gospel of john doesn’t convince me of anything. I’ve already read it dozens of times. The only thing that would convince me would be evidence that any of it is real — and there isn’t any of that.
    Peace.

  23. Read the Bible. Jesus said that we will be mocked and hated for our relationship with Him. Those who aren’t Christians don’t understand why we believe and why we do the things we do (or don’t do). People once drew disgusting graffiti of Christians way back during the age of the Roman Empire.
Christianity is mocked primarily because the media portrays us Christians as hateful and bigoted which is not true. Most Christians as well as atheists, Jews, etc. that I know personally are some of the nicest people I’ve met.
People are careful not to mock Islam because there will be a horrid uproar of angry Muslims with some of the more extreme believers carrying signs criticizing Western Civilization (remember what happened with the Danish cartoons and all). Take a look at Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician. He was known for making some disparaging comments against Islam and now he is being prosecuted for it since it’s considered “hate speech,” if you will (the govt. in the UK has forbidden him to speak, I think).
People don’t mock the other faiths you mentioned because they don’t get a whole lot of publicity. Mocking Judaism is unacceptable in most societies because of what happened in WWII (the Holocaust).
In short, love those who hate you and pray for them, too. God bless.

  24. Well there really isn’t a point in answering this question because you seem to already know the answer you’re going to believe in the end anyway. But for the sake of argument I’ll give it a go. There’s a few questions so I’ll take it slow for you.
    1. Buddhism isn’t a religion.
    2. Assuming from the question that you’re from America, we are a mostly Christian country soo… yea.
    3. If God doesn’t exist then we would want to stop people from thinking that he does. If people thought that a dragon at the center of earth is what makes gravity, then shouldn’t we tell them otherwise so they don’t infect our youth? I mean do you have any proof that there isn’t a dragon at the center of the earth? Does that mean that there is one? NO, it doesn’t.
    4. Why would I be afraid to mock a religion that’s leader has been filmed saying that they must kill all the Jews so that they can go to heaven??? Oh wait, that’s obvious.
    5. Trust me, it’s much harder to be an atheist. An atheist has nothing to live for but for himself and for the good of society. They can’t think that if they do good they’ll be eternally happy in paradise. They do the right thing for the simple fact that it’s right. Plus, I bet you sleep a lot better at night thinking that those guys that get away with murder get what’s coming to them. They don’t; that’s the meaning of “getting away with it.” (Disclaimer: I don’t condone murder in cases where you wont get caught. Character is what you would do if no one was looking. Since God would always be looking, you don’t have any character do you.)
    6. So I’m suppose to refer to a book to tell me that the book is true, since it is the words of God through people. I will paste a caption on the fallacy of circular reasoning (begging the question) so that you can see the connection:
Normally, the point of good reasoning is to start out at one place and end up somewhere new, namely having reached the goal of increasing the degree of reasonable belief in the conclusion. The point is to make progress, but in cases of begging the question there is no progress.
Example:”Women have rights,” said the Bullfighters Association president. “But women shouldn’t fight bulls because a bullfighter is and should be a man.”
The president is saying basically that women shouldn’t fight bulls because women shouldn’t fight bulls. This reasoning isn’t making any progress toward determining whether women should fight bulls.
I use to be Catholic so I understand that people need something to believe in like children need Santa. But sooner or later you have to start being accountable for your own actions. If people do things because God tells them to, that means they have no other reason to do it. But if you can say that something is right/wrong whether you have blind faith in an Omniscient, Omnipotent, only-good being (God) or not, then it would be right/wrong for everyone in the world without any religious exceptions.

p.s. You mentioned a couple times about faith or beliefs being equivalent to truth. Maybe you should invest in a dictionary.

  26. jesus said: “You will know them (true christians) by their fruit. Grapes aren’t gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles…” that is, a true christian will bear the “fruit” of peace, love and joy which may be shared with any who choose to partake. to answer your question, i think people feel threatened by the judgments of so-called christians who are failing to produce the fruits of peace, love and joy.

  27. I despise people who aren’t Christians. But I would still like them to convert.
They know we are superior to them, so they mock us. It’s simple.

  28. The other religions are not trying to force their beliefs upon everyone as the christians have a tendency to do.
The reason rock and metal mock christianity is the amount of negative voices from christians about this type of music. We don;t have songs to mock other religions because the other religions don’t have as much of an issue with the music and/or the smaller base of the religions.
Since god/jesus is not real then the use of any beliefs based on him supposedly being real should not be used to make any national choices/opinions and laws.
If christianity wasn’t constantly thrown at me I would not have to constantly refute it.

  29. Ask yourself why it is only Christians that get attacked and not the other religions?!!!!
Do you not recognize that Christians are provoking retaliation and repudiation for their terrible attitudes?!!
Perhaps if Christians stopped their intolerant, egotistical, hate filled and bigoted postings things might change!!
Perhaps if Christians stopped eschewing education, science, evolution works of fiction and much, much more things might change!!
Perhaps if Christians stopped being the only religion opposing human rights and persecuting gays, pro choice and so much more things might change!!
Perhaps if Christians stopped demanding freedom of religion whilst they deny it to all non Christians and persecute them things might change!! !!!
If Christians rediscovered the god of love and forgiveness and put aside all those terrible human emotions things would definitely change!!!!
Why are Christians so afraid of people who simply do not believe in any god?!!!! Surely it can only be because they are so afraid that atheist are right and they are wrong or it would not bother them!!!!!!
As soon as Christians rediscover the loving god and start acting like it the problem will cease!!!!
AS for why they are such a threat to society!!
Government statistics show that christians are vastly over represented in prisons for sexual, violent and fraudulent crime!!
The Catholic church is paying millions in compensation for the sex/pedophile crimes of their priests alone!!
Christians are vastly over represented in the divorce courts!!
Christians invented the concept of sin and then the idea that you could sin, ask forgiveness, get pardoned and start with a clean sheet!!
So no surprise that they are so expert at it is it?!!!

  30. I am assuming that you live in the United States, where Christianity is the largest religious group that people affiliate with. Much smaller percentages of Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Wicca, etc. exist in the United States and much of Europe. Many Christians are vocal about their viewpoints (televangelists, radio programs, The Passion of the Christ, religious groups knocking on your door, etc.). Other religious viewpoints are not circulated in the media nearly as much. Therefore people that are in opposition to those viewpoints focus their energy on Christianity. They chose their “battle” if you will.
I respect that you are a believer, but it is a fallacy to argue that a small minority of people that do not believe in Christ (or God) provides proof of his/its existence. In my experience (as someone raised in a VERY Christian household), Christians and many other religious groups desire to be martyrs. They proclaim that they are being persecuted at every opportunity. The evidence suggests otherwise. Christianity is very accepted in our society.
In the meantime, don’t worry about people stamping Jesus out of society. This shouldn’t change how you feel, which in the end is what matters.

  31. Of course Christianity is a threat to the rest, first of all their God is real and alive, demons tremble by the name of Jesus, every time His name is mentioned the dark forces are under a threat, secondly, His blood is still got the power to change, cleanse and heal, if demons are not working against Christians the whole world would turn to Jesus.

  32. Might have something to do with the past 2000 year rampage the religion has been on across the planet, wiping out indigenous ways of life and slaughtering their people along with it…
