Why do people think Wicca is only practiced by teenage girls?

I See a bunch of answers saying ‘don’t do Wicca its just a phase for teenage girls’ Seriously?? What makes them say that?

  1. Because it is childish?
Obviously no more than Christianity…but is still childish.
‘Wicca’ is very recent, the true religion behind it i have a little more respect for, but this watered down half christian half pagan crap that most ‘witches’ (HAHAHA) practice is embarrassing.

  2. Because I haven’t met any adults practicing it.
I guess professional career-oriented life and spellbooks don’t really go together…

  3. From the new age festivals i have been to i have found out that it is also practiced by nice middle aged women and creepy men in unbuttoned silk shirts.

  4. From my experience, half the time “Wicca” is just a phase for teenage girls.
For some, its not. There’s no greater merit in Wicca than Christianity, and I think that in the main, most people who claim to follow it eventually come to see that, and give it up.

  5. That’s not entirely true; it also seems to appeal to useless, laughable hippies of both genders and all ages.
But it IS popular with teenagers, partly because it’s faintly ridiculous and partly because it seems “rebellious” to them.

  6. I have no idea what they’re talking about. Not all Wicca are teenage girls. I know that, and I’m not even Wicca.

Im talking of course, about the Church of ManBearPig.
“And lo, ManBearPig did slay the mighty Big Foot in the woodlands of Colorado and said to his disciple Al Gore ‘Go now my child, and spread the word that ManBearPig has arisen again, but tell them not false stories and fantasies of a divine being, but instead the truth, that ManBearPig is a cruel and merciless Lord to all who appose him. But salvation will be found to those who embrace him.” – Austin 3:16

    I’m super serial.

  8. Because a lot of people like to think that beliefs they don’t agree with are “just a phase” and part of the growing up process. Just like when they did it, I suppose.

  9. I kind of assumed it encompasses all layers of the female population.
Umm, maidens, mothers and crones, amirite?

  10. It’s a stereotype, similar to ‘how all atheists believe in the Big Bang’ or ‘how all christians are unintelligent’.

  11. My experience is that it is primarily practiced by people on the fringes of main stream society who simply enjoy defying convention and don’t really believe in the religion.
And yes I have even attended a few wiccan ceremonies and have known several wiccans….those who where older where frankly losers and drop outs from society.

  12. Most people realise that such practices result in nothing more than a fantasy-high after the age of 15 or so.
Though honestly it depends on what you’re doing. If you’re trying love or money spells then I think of those people as lazy idiots. If you call yourself a wiccan because of ‘nature’ of the philosophy of it then whatever…your call.

  13. They say that because it is true. Lots of teens do wicca as a phase that they are going through..

  14. it sells movies and TV shows, people are ignorant
Would “Charmed” or “Buffy” be a hit if the star was middle aged, maybe three 50 year old sisters living in a house? Not so much. I mean Holly Marie was pushing 40 at best, but makeup and lighting can do a lot, LOL

  15. Because people are misinformed and ignorant and strive to stay that way …
I don’t take them seriously nor does it bother me … our energy is precious and I’m not giving any of it to those black holes
    to the knucklehead above …
<-------- Career corporate professional for 20 years with my own business practicing forms of Wicca Edit - Wow ... I see ignorance is running wild here today ...

  16. Because people aren’t properly informed and think that magic is childish. Wicca is definitely not for me but it’s not my place to judge someone’s religion.

  17. What else can it be other than …. ignorance?
I hope you find the answer you seek and peace in your heart.
    Blessed Be, my friend..

  18. I know a lot of gay females who thought they were more powerful because of the feminine of them joining their spirits in love and their love of the goddess.

  19. Ignorance. If Wicca was limited to only teenage girls, it wouldn’t be around right now. I’m not Wiccan (I’m a Nordic Heathen), but I do know a lot of them. I can assure anyone who doubts that there are many people who follow that base faith who are my age (39) or older. There are also some who consider *any* faith to be “childish”. Just be strong in your own faith and screw what other people think.
Do try not to act like a complete lunatic, though. I’ve met some Wiccans who do that and it just kills any chance they have of being taken seriously. So no shoving your faith in other people’s faces with the whole “spellcraft” thing. It’s not only a sign of a weak mind to feel you must do that, it most likely attracts badgers.
Vicious little North American badgers, not the relatively placid and shy European badgers.

  20. Well I do know this; the young do not have a monopoly on stupidity.
As it is stupid to worship anything/anyone except Yahweh.

  21. Merry Meet!
Who knows. I know plenty of grown Wiccans. I just happened to discover it while I was a teenager. It’s one of the best things I ever did.
    Blessed be!

  22. Its because of the stereotype that seems to follow the religion. Of course not all followers of Wicca are teen girls, just like not all Christians are brain-dead fundies.
Just like in *lots* of other things, people are uninformed and wish to stay that way. Try not to let it get to you.

  23. You know the saying
If you don’t find something stupid to believe in till you are 18 you are emotionless, if you still believe in it after you are 18 you are dumb
The original saying refers to Communism but I think it is just the same to all ideologies and religions.
I personally think that any one with a brain can’t be a part of any religion.

  24. Because most people are willfully ignorant of any religion that is not their own. Their only exposure to “wicca” was the TV show “Sabrina The Teenaged Witch”. Honestly, they probably even think that Wiccans have talking cats.

  25. Because a lot of girls come to Wicca when they are young, most don’t stay.
It is an attractive religion for adolescents because it is empowering, stating you can effect the outcome via magic.

  26. Those who know will recognize that a teenage girl is most likely to attract poltergeists and other paranormal phenomena. So is it not only natural for these girls to attempt to get answers to these vexations through an immediately, readily acceptable source called Wicca?
I never heard anyone claim that “only teenage girls practice Wicca”, though. I am “pushing’ 50 years old” and practice Wicca. My Circle (“Coven” if you insist) has an equal split of Male (Wizard) and Female (Witch) and our ages range from 6 years old to over sixty. Not one of us practices the same discipline, however. We have a healer, a seer, an herbalist, a wand-carver, a Tarot Card specialist, and more.
We don’t spit on or look down upon any one elses belief, prefering to adopt a “live and let live” approach. We do, however, believe that there are aspects of Christianity and Wicca that can be combined to assist the Wiccan in practice. (Please don’t lecture me this part… you arent really Wiccan or fully Christian if you can’t understand that: The two are not mutually exclusive). “Live and let live.” “Do what thou wilt, harm none.” “Do unto others as you would have done to you.”
A few more points: Wiccans are in no way militant; we are pacifists who love the world and all in it. We do not recognize Satan, let alone worship him, or any devil for that matter. Wicca has been around -in Pagan practice- longer than Christianity, which began, with Jesus Christ as a Pagan Practice. True… look it up in the HB.

  27. As already said by another, it is willful ignorance.
What is really funny is that most covens will not initiate anyone under 18 unless the teen has a parent that is a member. Therefore the claim that all/most wiccans are teens is impossible.
I didn’t even attend a ritual until I was 35. I know many elders who are in their 60s or 70s. Some of which were practicing “the old ways” before Gardner came up with the word Wicca.

  28. i am 22 years old and i have been practicing wicca my whole life.i have never been a loser or drop out.i am engaged to a very normal person,i own my own brand new home, and i have a very good job and im also going to college! so those of you who think its childish or a phase you have no idea what your talking about and should go read a book.wicca has been around before christians have.i live a more then normal life and i also teach wicca to grown adults none of which are teens.
