Why do Obama say he's christian when he is more skeptical about religion/christianity than his atheist mom?

In his 2006 book The Audacity of Hope Obama wrote, “I was not raised in a religious household… My mother’s own experiences… only reinforced this inherited skepticism. Her memories of the Christians who populated her youth were not fond ones… And yet for all her professed secularism, my mother was in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I’ve ever known.”[36] Religion for her was “just one of the many ways – and not necessarily the best way – that man attempted to control the unknowable and understand the deeper truths about our lives,” Obama wrote.[34] In 2007 Obama described his mother as “a Christian from Kansas.” “I was raised by my mother,” he continued. “So, I’ve always been a Christian.”[37][38] Also in 2007, he said in a speech, “My mother, whose parents were nonpracticing Baptists and Methodists, was one of the most spiritual souls I ever knew. But she had a healthy skepticism of religion as an institution.”[

  1. Anybody who votes for abortion and then says he’s a Christian, well, you know from the get-go, this person ain’t right.

  2. Anyone who says “ain’t right” is not right in the head.
Also, he’s an atheist and smart enough to know that to say so would be political suicide.
And quite frankly, with the ignorant bigots in this country, possibly the regular kind of suicide too.

  3. hes not chirsitan lmao… going to a church for 20 years in which basically said screw america does not make you a christian
and also dan alison antother thumbs up to you i really like your answers

  4. I think you just interpreted that entry wrong. Anyways, to answer your question, skepticism about one’s beliefs might be good, it retains an open mind.

  5. Kind of nice to have a president who dosen’t make a big show of how religious he is-shows maybe he can think for himself.

  6. Barack Obama is not an ignorant fundie, thank God. We will soon have intelligence back in the White House after 8 years ruled by a fundie moron.
Healthy skepticism is the sign of an intelligent mind.

  7. A good Christian should be skeptical of their own religion and continuously ask questions. The same applies for people who are Buddhist, Hindu, etc. Why are you viewing skepticism so negatively here?

  8. The same reason McCain does. The same reason Bush did. They needed the votes, and a huge segment of the voting population wants to hear that.

  9. most christians do not have absolute faith in the literal meaning of every verse of the bible. most of the scriptures that people apparently subscribe to have been rationalized and interpreted to fit in with our time and lifestyle. the only exception are people we refer to as fundamentalists or extremists and we should be happy if our next president does not belong to either of these groups.

  10. Isn’t it time to put this issue to rest? This country has serious problems and you focus on his religion or lack thereof.
    Typical voter mentality.

  11. Anyone can say, I’m a Christian; if so then they will bear good fruit and pass it on to his fellow man.
Only God knows the heart of a person.

  12. He went to a United Church of Christ, the same church I belong to. It is a Christian denomination which is not Governed by any board or deity. Do your homework.

  13. He’s saying he and his mother are religious and believe in christ with out necessarily putting stock in all of the bible’s teachings because christianity as a religious institution (some christians and church elders) has proven to be corrupt and manipulative of others at times. with the crusades, inquisition, tithes, outlawing gay marriage and abortion, you know. It’s a very modern view of christianity, he never bad mouths it and he himself is a regular church goer so i see no problem with it.

  14. He is in good company…. I can provide more quotes from different leaders of our country if you so desire.
Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.

All natural institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

…and yet he goes to church and believes in some form of god (what form I couldn’t attest to unless I got to know him personally).

  15. Did you ever hear of a 3 peat
Well i believe we just might have a 2 peat
Let God speak to your heart
I would rather not judge these people
But we sure had an 8 yr rain (Reign) principal that about destroyed this
land from sea to shinning sea.
I love everyone That is what Jesus said to do.
But we fight against evil principals.

  16. I surely do hope he’s skeptical about religion. We don’t want another president who hears voices in his head. After the 9/11 attacks Bush announced to the world that God ordered him to invade Iraq — and look how well that worked out.

  17. Skepticism for the Christian is equal to humility. We should possess it but at the same time be sure of what we have. I am a Christian. I believe that Jesus is the only way. I believe that He is the Jewish Messiah. On the same note, I believe it is healthy to question Him. It shows that I want to understand Him and His world better. It shows that I am not following blindly; rather, I am following because I have studied Him and His ways. Skepticism turns bad when we allow it to conquer our faith. I don’t think Obama is implying that. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so. It is good to acknowledge the good in atheism, Judaism, Islam, etc.; but, at the same time, we must keep our faith and adherence to Christ and his teachings entact. This doesn’t contradict. The Jews before Jesus did the same thing, and still do. Questioning is enlightening and leads to a deeper understanding of God and the Bible if we allow it. Enough said.

  18. Dude, I am a long time Christian who, like my own church, accepts that the Bible was written and sometimes doctored by men and because of this is flawed.
I have great faith in God but my faith is not ‘blind’ faith. It is based on the teachings of Christ. Barack Obama, from his lifetime of showing care and concern for the poor and needy, suggests to me that he is a practicing Christian and when he says he is a Christian I have no reason to doubt him.
EDIT: To the person who says he supports abortion this simply isn’t true. I know of no one who ‘supports’ abortion. But I do know many who believe a woman owns her own body and believes the government has no right to tell her what she can or can not do with her body. Believing a woman owns the right to her own body is not the same thing as ‘supporting’ abortion.
And I have met many a people who were more spiritual, more ‘Christian’ than many unforgiving, uncompromising fundies I’ve known.
EDIT: All the thumbs downs pretty much proove how many ‘stone casters’ there are here answering your question. Judging others seem to go hand in hand with the fundie mentality.

  19. If people listened carefully to him, all during the campaign he changed what he was saying until at the end he sounded more like McCain than McCain did. He has no plan, and he is going to run into trouble soon and we better hope that someone in his administration will guide this nation.

  20. Apparently Obama lived a sheltered life: “my mother was in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I’ve ever known.” I find this very hard to believe. Now God has given us a commandment to honor our parents but this goes a little too far.
Anyone who would practice honesty would go to the root of Christianity, study Church history, study the saints and see with the help and grace of God that the Catholic Church is the saving ark of mankind: outside of which no one can be saved at all.
“For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.”
I cannot repeat myself enough times: there is only ONE faith, ONE baptism, ONE fold, ONE Shepherd ONE Church that Our Lord and Saviour Jesus the Christ has founded. The reason you or Obama or anyone else is not a member, (and its not like you don’t have the time to investigate, and you will not be able to claim that you sinned out of ignorance just like Eve was not able to claim that she was tempted by the devil) is because you have not sought the Lord in all sincerity. You have valued the things of this world moreso than your eternal salvation.
“For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?”
Most of you are so confused because you see all these different religions and because you don’t want to offend anybody (except God) you accept all these different religions, sects, cults, etc as good and praiseworthy. Then little by little you loose whatever little bit of faith you might have had, and ultimately become a material atheist. Just like the parents of Obama’s mother whom he charaterizes as non-praciticing Protestants. It’s going to be the end of all Protestants (and many Novus Ordo Catholics…who have really become Roman Protestants) to become secular humanists at best. So, sadly, what can we expect to see of Obama but a man raised by a single mom, claiming she was a “Christian”, and to pretty much follow in her footsteps. At least that is what he would like to have us believe. He’s not the first and he won’t be the last, and when he falls into the depths of Hell along with so many others he will be forgotten forever.

  21. Just try reading a small sample of Christian postings on here!!!
Intolerant, egotistical, hate filled and bigoted!! Eschewing education, science, evolution works of fiction and much, much more. Christians are the only religion opposing human rights and persecuting gays, pro choice and so much more – but far worse whilst they demand freedom of religion they deny it to all non Christians and persecute them!!!
Gandhi said, “I like your Christ; I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ”!!!!!!!
It is not the religion but the terrible human emotions and lack of a loving god in it’s followers!!
