Why do Christians think there must be persistence of consciousness after death?

Can you think without a brain? (trick question, and i hope there are some witty answers!)

Mark001 — you seem to be suffering from some sort of digital emphysema — i’d get that checked out …. if…. i…. were…. you…..
congratulations, bad_to_t…
that’s the best laugh i’ve had so far!
“you don’t understand” “you must understand” “what you don’t realize,” etc. how presumptuous can you get? well, here you go:
bad, what you don’t realize is that there is no god. you seem to believe in a thing called a ‘spirit’ that is eternal and unknowable, which is the wishful thinking of a child at best, and the cause of horrible wars and personal strife at worst. you have to understand that the more education you afford yourself, the less possible it becomes to believe such pie-in-the-sky.
so… do you like being talked to that way?

  1. Can you think without a brain? Creationists seem to get by ok.
Seriously though in the bronze age when the OT was written they had no idea what differentiated living from dead, of course they’d come up with some magical essence that animated us. Now we know about biochemistry and brains… we know what makes us think and feel, it seems silly to cling to the old idea in spite of what we’ve learned.

  2. Some people on earth don’t think WITH a brain…..but I guess that’s not the same thing.
Some of them are alive and walking while their brain is CLEARLY not functioning….wait, that’s not the same thing, either….
Okay, well it’s not the same but proves our point. If you can be alive and on the planet and walking around and having paparazzi following you all the time and CLEARLY not have a functional brain, then what’s the issue?

  3. The BRAIN…. dies a “Biological Death” due to Acidosis… about 6-to-10 minutes AFTER….. Oxygenated Blood stops Flowing!
So does the Rest of the BODY….!
    BUT….. the Sprit … IS… ETERNAL…!
    You are so sure… WITHOUT… ANY … EMPERICAL EVIDENCE…. THAT …. DEATH IS ….ALL… THERE… IS ?
    …. SILLY…. RABBIT….. TRICKS…. ARE…. FOR… [ Non Thinking ]….. ” kids ! ”
    Thanks, RR

  4. Many Christians do not believe in persistence of consciousness after death.
The Bible says, “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. . . . Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, 10 – emphasis added)

  5. Not just Christians, many of the world religions believe in life after death. Life after death can neither be proved nor disproved. This is because one would have to undergo physical death in order to prove or disprove it (and by its very nature, disproving it would not be possible).
Did you ask this questions to poke at Christians? or was it just the “witty answers” you sought?

  6. You ask your question of terms of that which is of flesh, physical in nature. You can’t understand spiritual because you are flesh.
You believe that the brain is needed in order for men to think. Yet, when the soul of the man leaves the fleshly body, you evidently believe he cannot think.
Most likely, you also believe that when a man suffers physical death, he just ceases to exist.
Just know that there will come a day when you have died, the truth you deny now, you won’t deny then.
For your soul, if you die in your sins will be cast into the fires of hell where it will be tormented day and night.
You must understand that when a man is born, God breathes the breathe of life into that man. Yet, because of sin, the spirit that is alive is slain, dies in the man. What that means is the man, if he dies without having his spirit reborn will be taken to the place known as death and hell where he will be reserved until the day of judgment. For Adam sold all the souls of mankind unto death. And unless a man is reborn, born again in his spirit, quickened by the quickening spirit Christ Jesus, his soul will be cast into hell.
