Why did Laozi establish Taoism?

Confucianism was corrupt.
The Period of the Warring States was ending.
The Qin dynasty was too harsh.
The Zhou dynasty was in decline.

  1. I’m confused… Is this a multiple choice test question? If I had to guess, I’d say it was because he felt Confucianism was corrupt. Also, Taoism developed in part because of an era of exploration in philosophy where philosophers went around to different regions in China talking to the ruling elite about their philosophies in an attempt to get them to accept it. I forget what the period was called…

    Lao Tsu cannot really be said to have established Taoism.
    According to ancient legend, Lao Tsu; was riding off into the desert to die, sick at heart at the ways of men, he was persuaded by a gatekeeper in northwestern China to write down his teaching for posterity.
    The essence of Taoism is contained in the eighty-one chapters of the book, The Tao Te Ching.
    If it were not for this event and being asked to write his work down, we may well not have the Tao Te Ching now and hence no followers of Taoism who later established Taoist traditions..
