Why did FDR call welfare a narcotic?

In his , FDR spoke to a nation mired in the Depression, but still marinated in conservative values:
“[C]ontinued dependence” upon welfare, said FDR, “induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole our relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.”
Behind FDR’s statement was the conviction that, while the government must step in in an emergency, in normal times, men provide the food, clothing and shelter for their families.

So obviously welfare was supposed to be a temporary solution and the government was only to provide help “in an emergency situation.”

If FDR recognized that welfare causes disintegration of the national fiber, why is the program around 75 years after it was created?

  1. If FDR recognized that welfare causes disintegration of the national fiber, why is the program around 75 years after it was created?
    Your Answer:
Once a federal program gets started it gets expanded. What program has ever been scrapped?

  2. It’s stil around for two reasons. One, the government doesn’t create temporary programs which is why their power over banks and the auto industry is permanent. The other reason is that the number of people addicted to the narcotic of welfare has been getting bigger for 75 years which means they’re addicted to a government program and dependent on the government itself. When someone needs you that’s when you have power over them.

  3. Once you use a narcotic, you become dependent. Moochers love welfare because they know they can get more and more free government cheese.

  4. He also said that “Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute worker.”
The government is tasked to create jobs, because the wealthy and the corporations have proved that they are incapable of doing so, all they do is hoard their wealth.
