Why are some Christians terrified of tarot cards?

When I practiced reading cards, I found a lot of people were scared of them, afraid to even be near them. What is the reason for that fear?

  1. mmm. i don’t think it’s necessarily a Christian fear. I’m not afraid of them. I don’t think it’s a good idea… but they don’t scare me.

  2. Well in the Bible, it says that witchcraft is an abomination to God.
I’m a Christian and I’m not afraid of tarot cards, but I wouldn’t ever entertain the idea of them.

  3. I have tarophobia. That not to be confused with terraphobia..fear of the earth.
Definetly not tarantaphobia, fear of big hairy spiders..big enough to carry small children away. Yuck!

  4. Some people actually believe they are demonic. They believe that a card reader has opened himself up to demonic influence, and that if they sat for a reading, they would be opening themselves up as well.
Personally, I love the artwork on the Tarot Classic, the Universal-Waite Deck, and the Llewellyn deck. They all make awesome Rorschach tests.

  5. cus one second you be readin dem tarrot cards an’ da next thing ya know you be spendind yo Sunday afternoo pickin throo ya pubes lookin fo ya’ll kno wat

  6. In Conflict With Bible Teachings
The Hebrew prophets, however, did not reject astrology merely because of its manifest failure to predict the future accurately. The Law that God gave to Moses specifically warned the Israelites against looking for omens. “There should not be found in you . . . anyone who employs divination . . . or anyone who looks for omens,” the Law stated. “Everybody doing these things is something detestable to Jehovah.”–Deuteronomy 18:10, 12.
Although astrology is not mentioned by name in that scripture, the prohibition evidently included the practice. The Encyclopædia Britannica notes that astrology is a “type of divination that consists in forecasting earthly and human events by means of observing and interpreting the fixed stars, the Sun, the Moon, and the planets.” All forms of divination–whether based on the stars or other objects–violate God’s guidelines. Why? There is good reason.
Rather than attribute our successes or failures to the stars, the Bible clearly states that “whatever a man is sowing, this he will also reap.” (Galatians 6:7) God holds each of us responsible for our actions, since we are free moral agents. (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20; Romans 14:12) True, we may suffer an accident or an illness because of events beyond our control. But such calamities, the Scriptures explain, are due to “time and unforeseen occurrence,” not our horoscope.–Ecclesiastes 9:11.
With regard to human relationships, the Bible urges us to clothe ourselves with such qualities as compassion, kindness, lowliness of mind, mildness, long-suffering, and love. (Colossians 3:12-14) These qualities are the key to forging lasting friendships and strengthening marriages. “Astrological affinity” is not a reliable guide for choosing a marriage mate. Psychologist Bernard Silverman analyzed the birth horoscopes of some 3,500 couples, 17 percent of whom had subsequently become divorced. He did not find a lower divorce rate among those who had married a partner who was ‘astrologically compatible.’
Clearly, astrology is both unreliable and misleading. It could cause us to blame the stars rather than ourselves when we make mistakes. Above all, it is clearly condemned in God’s Word.

  7. Hello Ragan,
I’m new to this site as I’m sure you know.
I’m a practicing Christian. The best answer that,I for you is first, terrified is a very strong word. I’d like to believe that other Christians would agree with me.Tarot cards are superstitious, can confuse and instill fear in a person.
True Christians know that the Lord decides our future and not a deck of cards.

  8. I do believe that the Tarot publishers contribute to this fear. Tarot is one of the most distorted and misrepresented of cultural artifacts. Contrary to what too many Tarot publishers claim, the Church never waged any campaign to ban Tarot cards. Tarot cards were originally intended for card games which are still played today in continental Europe and they would only become involved with occultism centuries after their creation. Most people, including Christians, have only been exposed to these cards in connection with divination and the occult. If more people knew of the actual history and of the uses of these cards for game playing, Christians as well as others would be a lot less frightened of them.

  9. Because they are ignorant of what tarot is, of how to use the cards, and of what you can and can’t actually do with them. The don’t summon the devil or spirits or anything like that. They don’t even tell you a solid future, and they certainly don’t determine the future. They can’t be used to control things, to make things happen, or anything of the sort. They’re a meditation tool to help give you insight into a situation. But most of the Christians who hate and fear tarot are told that divination is Satanic and sinful. Many of those people don’t bother thinking things through for themselves. I think if they did they might still dislike tarot but would realize there’s nothing to be afraid of.

  10. Because they don’t have FULL trust and faith in the precious blood of Christ to overcome ANY evil.
Whether tarot cards are evil or of satan(that’s why I believe many FEAR them) I don’t know and whats more I don’t care.
What I do know is that there’s a lot of so called “Christians” who are afraid of many different things. SO SAD.
We read in 2 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of FEAR, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”
Also we read in Hebrews 13:6
So we may boldly say: “ The Lord is my helper;I will not FEAR.What can man do to me?”
Again we read in 1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out FEAR, because FEAR involves torment. But he who FEARS has not been made perfect in love”
Finally something that’s very familiar to all of us from the 23rd Psalm
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will FEAR NO EVIL; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me”
CONCLUSION: While we’re all human and by our nature fear various things, like tarot cards, we can and should overcome them by faith and trust in Him.
    1 John 4:4
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is GREATER than he who is in the world.
Do you know and FULLY trust Him?

  11. I’m a Christian and I use tarot cards. I have the gift of prophesy and tarot cards are tools I use to manifest that gift. Tarot cards are not witchcraft. I am not conjuring anything or trying to make anything happen. I am not connecting with any spirit other than the Holy Spirit that resides in me. For Jews that are still under the Old Testament, the tarot cards may be against their religion. But I am a Christian, Christ’s death freed me from the law. Just fyi, Jesus’ disciples used lots to decide who to pick as their 12th disciples and drawing lots is also mentioned 2 times in the Old Testament.
Acts 1:23-26 “And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their LOTS; and the LOT fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”
Matthew 12:22-30 “But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? And then he will spoil his house. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.”
Don’t ever let anyone tell you who or what you are in Christ. Always pray and read yourself. Blessed be.
