  1. He was a British guy who lived at the end of the Victorian age and the first half of the 20th century. He was one of the first of the Neo-Eastern inspired New Age occultists. Basically he thought old symbology and religious ideas, particularly from the early Hellenised Midle East, were really cool. He also liked to dress up in robes and pretend he could do magic.
He was associated with “Thelema” and the “Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.” I know he particularly identifies with the amalgamated Hellenized Egyptian deity Hermes Trismegistus, which has been an occult and mysticism figure for two thousand years.
His influence is mostly on music and pop culture. He never comes up in academic philosophy, comparative mythology, theology, religious studies, etc. He’s kind of like Rasputin I guess, he’s become sort of a cultural legend in comic books and stuff like that.

His “translation” of the Dao De Jing is very interesting, although completely inaccurate and he takes tonnes of liberties with Daoist concepts:

The comic book writer Alan Moore is a fan, he probably interprets Crowley in the best light. If you’re interested, I recommend checking out his comic book “Promethea”.

EDIT – Re: good or bad. I don’t think he was either. He was a hedonist and moral relativist.

  2. I have read “The Diary of a Drug Fiend” and I must say, it is very good. One of my favorite quotes is from this book. “Everyone interprets everything in terms of his own experience. If you say anything which does not touch a precisely similar spot in another man’s brain, he either misunderstands you, or doesn’t understand you at all.” It is pretty deep if you ask me. Also, the book is full of poetry. In regards to magick, he overcame heroin and cocaine with it.
