who are the important people of taoism?

  1. People with social significance. People who thought of as more important, are thought to have more mystical control over others.

  2. Lao Tse (also seen as Lao Tsu or Lao Tzu) compiled the Tao Te Ching, which is the foundation of the teachings.
There is a good translation of the Tao Te Ching by Gia-Fu Feng & Jane English and also one from Barnes & Noble Classics with some interesting history.
Chuang-Tzu is considered one of the most important early interpreters of Taoism.
John Chalmers translated the Tao Te Ching into English for the first time.
Also, I have two other texts (so far) by Deng Ming-Dao (365 Tao and Everyday Tao). Although not as notable as the above references, they clearly indicate that Taoism did not begin with Lao Tse, but instead was formalized by him.
