Which is greater in your life, material fulfillment or Spiritual fulfillment?

The path to material gain
goes one way,
the way to Unbinding,
another.
Realizing this, the monk,
a disciple to the Awakened One,
should not relish offerings,
should cultivate seclusion
instead.
-Dhammapada, 5, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

  1. oh I have to ditto the first answer
    my family is most important
but I am not a material person at all … so spiritual fulfilment is more important to me

  2. there is not a whole lot of seclusion to be found when you have kids. i seek the ability to pay for thier school fees, the doritoes for thier lunches, and to pay the household bills.
if i hit the trail up to a mountain to meditate for a couple of years…. where does that leave my FAMILY?

  3. Spiritual fulfillment is greater. There’s nothing like that warm and loving feeling inside when you’ve done something for another person or have really connected and experienced the awe of our spiritualness.

  4. Spiritual matters of course. And my ‘spiritual’ I mean that which betters humanity and creates joy and laughter in this world.
Material gains aren’t ‘bad’ but don’t become attached.
Wealth can be a channel to make people happy and to share joy.
For instance, if you have a big house and lots of money and enjoy hosting gatherings and get togethers that bring joy to everyone, that is a good thing. If you have a big house and just ramble around the empty rooms admiring your material possessions and gloating to yourself, then the big house is just a shack and a prison.

  5. spiritual of course!”if you are lacking of knowledge, what have you adquired?,if you adquired knowledge, what have you lacking”,the spiritual path bring you principles, ways ,techniques to live happy with a few things, material things bring you the most of the time sadness and frustration specially if you depends on it.

  6. Spiritual fulfillment because then i will not be bothered with material fulfillment.
If i went after material fulfillment then i will still be lacking.
I can only speak for myself, although i think it is this way with most people.

  7. Hello beloved brother.. πŸ™‚
The greater fulfillment in my life is to be filled with the Spirit..
We cannot take our material things with us when we die..they also have a tendency to grow old, much too quickly..then we must search for something else to make us happy..when we live in a world of materials wants..then we are never truly satisfied.. πŸ™
But I have found that when we put others needs before that of our own..we are no longer looking for more material needs and wants..because they do not matter to us..as they did before.. πŸ™‚
I have given ALL my things away (accept for my clothes) 3 times in the past 7 years..I have been so Blessed and each time, I end up having more than I need, in material things..so here I go once more.. πŸ™‚
If we cannot help someone that is in need, than what does that show to others.. πŸ™
    Galatians 5
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 ¢ If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vainglory, provoking one another, envying one another.
    In Jesus Most Precious Name..
    With Love..your sister..In Christ.. πŸ™‚

  8. Spiritual fullfillment is much more important and is necessary for true happiness.
Matthew 16:26 For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfiets his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

  9. There was a time I was overcome with the material side of life. I was a single parent & times were tough. Yet, the Spiritual path was always on my mind, an undercurrent of things to come. Now, older, wiser, & less encombered it is my obsession. I don’t know if seeking the spiritual changed my life or if getting unencombered brought me here, & in the end it matters little, I am here. The stuff is of no consequence, of course would it be so easy for me to say if I could not feed my family?
