What year were the books on buddha written?

To my understanding, it is believed that after Siddhartha Gautama became enlightened, his story was kept alive through oral tradition for a good time and after a while, it was written onto paper.
What years is it supposed that the buddha lived?
Around what time were the books on his life written?
