It was after 1986. Ours didn’t have one.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that Center High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSLs) reduce accidents and injuries. As a result, the NHTSA now requires all new cars (since 1986) and all new light trucks (since 1994) to have a third brake light.
So you can assume they went on the year mandated, 1986.

the bad seed

after 1986 all cars had to have them

Ok now that the WRONG ANSWERS have wasted your time.
The correct answer is 1994.
Good Luck

My 93 XJ does not have one …..
It was loaded version but striping it to make a toy out of it any one needs parts lol

The Cherokee was considered a light truck by the Feds. So 1994 is when they got them.
