what kinds of evidence could prove or disprove the notion that hypnosis is a unique state of consciousness?
I’m wondering what others believe it is.

  1. go to a hypnist [haha i dont know what you call them!] and get hypnotized or make a friend do it and videotape! that would be so fun too!

  2. There is a way of attaching sticky probes on the head which monitors brain waves via a computer. During the hypnotic state brain waves change, and this can be seen on the screen.

  3. Hypnosis, by definition, is an altered state of consciousness and in one way or another we have all experienced a light version of it; reading a book, watching television, and daydreaming, etc. Deep hypnosis is brought on by trained personnel such as a hypnotherapist.
While most individuals will not achieve a true deep hypnotic, or somnambulism state, it is very useful in regression therapy where hidden or submerged memories are recalled sometimes causing hallucinations.
Clients will tend to take these hallucinations literally seeing them within the boundaries of their hypnotic state. This type of hypnosis needs to be given by a trained hypnotherapist to reduce the risk of implanted memories or self-created memories which may be damaging to the client.
