What is your Koan?

(I know! I know! But there seems to be so much pain out there right now that this other ‘one off’ seems kinda urgent.)
Koans are the crazy, nonsensical question asked in Zen. They have no intellectual answers but yet the Master insists on an answer. The strain of working on a koan is great. There is no answer. Yet you MUST answer. How????
Out of the Spirit?
The answer, when it comes, certainly blasts you out of the mundane into the spiritual.
A Western Zen master, talking to lay people, said, “The koan arises naturally in daily life”.
What’s driving you crazy right now?
What is impossible to resolve?
What is your Koan?
(Don’t ask me. I’m just some old bloke, blundering about).
Look – I’m not actually ‘back’. I still need a few weeks away.
It’s just that I’m suddenly seeing loads of suffering out there. All sorts of people with just sooo many problems and pain.
And it’s mainly stuff that that almost seems insoluble. Unless you go IN!!!
So spread the word m’dears. This question doesn’t really seem to have worked.
With so many of the problems we’re seeing – the only way out is IN.
Intuition and Spirit are becoming essential parts of present day healing.
And I’m in serious danger of preaching.
But it comes out of love and out of concern for the suffering of people.

How much does a question about nothing weigh?

Insomniac

When the four winds blow together, christianity will suddenly make sense and this question will cease to exist. Answer me that.

Casey J

Why is there “something” rather than “nothing” ?

Off My Diet

Maybe it’s just me, but I use Yogi Berra quotes as koans.
“If you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

The answers obviously are not important… its the content of an absurd questions that brings enlightenment!
Its like asking: what is the meaning of life? There is no reasonable answer… other that our present consciousness!

Where does infinity end?
What is on the other side of it?
What was there before the Big Bang?
and,
what’s more important:
Why do I still think about things like that?

Mrs Badgrumbles

Old blokes blundering about are funny innit.
Koans can be kind of personal though.

Does this world have any real importance or not.

A zen koan is a short story or sentence that initially seems paradoxical in nature. It is a learning tool intended to alter our perception of reality. A paradox is something that does not make sense. In the case of a koan, it is how we think that does not make sense.Once our mind is capable of seeing things more simply, there ceases to be a paradox.Nobody can answer a koan for you.It may take years for your mind to see what a koan is telling you – a sudden unexpected flash of insight will occur. Some interpretations you may come across are rather misleading: esoteric, convoluted religious explanations that assume an understanding of Buddhist precepts.Your understanding of a koan will change as you change.
Here are some examples of koan:Two monks were arguing about the temple flag waving in the wind. One said, “The flag moves.” The other said, “The wind moves.” They argued back and forth but could not agree. Hui-neng, the sixth patriarch, said: “Gentlemen! It is not the flag that moves. It is not the wind that moves. It is your mind that moves.” The two monks were struck with awe…..One day Banzan was walking through a market. He overheard a customer say to the butcher, “Give me the best piece of meat you have.””Everything in my shop is the best,” replied the butcher. “You can not find any piece of meat that is not the best.” At these words, Banzan was enlightened ….. Shuzan held out his short staff and said, “If you call this a short staff, you oppose its reality. If you do not call it a short staff, you ignore the fact. Now what do you wish to call this?”
proximity being “”””””LISTEN !!!!!, “””””””YOU ARE GOING TO DIE ANYWAY, SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL GO FOR IT!!!!!! BE A PLAYER IN THE GAME OF LIFE!!!!!! PLAY FULL OUT! BE FULLY ALIVE! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY MOMENT YOU ARE GIVEN! LIVE A BIG LIFE! CREATE A BIG GAME, WHERE YOU ARE CHALLENGED EVERY MOMENT TO BE AT YOUR VERY BEST!
LIFE IS NOT LIKE A MOVIE… YOU ONLY GET ONE TAKE.
“Somebody should tell us right at the start of our lives that we are dying…
Then, we might live life to the limit! Every minute of every day!
DO IT, I SAY! WHATEVER IT IS YOU WANT TO DO! Do it NOW!
There are only so many tomorrows…”i love what i have learnt and studied from this question and must say ;
Questions define and limit answers, and presuppose that everything can be explained is my koan jon 🙂

Do *I* feel pain? This was given to me over 10 years ago, I don’t know if the person that gave me this intended it as a case but that is the way it is. Welcome back! ~ : )

One day,
a student of *Suzuki-Roshi* confronted him in his office, and said,
“If you believe in freedom why do you keep your bird locked up in a cage?”
Suzuki Roshi went over and opened the door of the cage and the bird flew out of the cage and out of the window.
And Shunryu Suzuki turned to the student and said
“That bird is free -but you owe me a bird.”
*******************
(The bird came back** It feels free inside the cage**)
(welcome home Gotama)
