Each tradition has it’s own standard version of the Book and each Witch’s book will be different as he or she adds to it with time from many different sources. It is also known as a Grimoire. Shadows (or those from the Shadowlands) refers to those no longer in corporeal form. It is considered to be a book of spells (or incantations) for help from dead ancestors or the deities that inhabited this realm. During the Inquisition anyone found with a book of this nature was burned at the stake for witchcraft. Unfortunately even some monks made this category for having books of chants to the Holy creator. In Drakonika, which is a real place, it’s where Tobi compiles all the shadowed lives. Basically, it’s the big book of bad stuff that details all the suffering of people of present and past; the footnotes are made of names he expects to be subject later.

A Book of Shadows is a book of personalized spells, knowledge, herbology, etc (whatever a wiccan/witch wants to put in it) that they compiled together from hisher learning and researching the religious tenents.
It is a witch or wizards book that is a journal recording rituals, spells, and their results, as well as other magical information.
and all other things you have used for magic.
