What is chakra?

can some on explain (in great detail) what chakra is and how it works?
hope i put this in the right category

  1. A chakra is a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy. The word chakra literally translates as wheel or disk and refers to a spinning sphere of bioenergetic activity emanating from the major nerve ganglia branching forward from the spinal column. There are seven of these wheels stacked in a column of energy that spans from the base of the spine to the top of the head. There are also minor chakras in the hands, feet, fingertips, and shoulders. Literally, any vortex of activity could be called a chakra. It is the seven major chakras that correlate with basic states of consciousness….

  2. chakras are superphysical centers or organs through which the energies of the different fields are synchronized and distributed to the physical body. They are more or less active on the astral, mental and on even higher levels in which they have different roles, but they are of primary importance at the etheric level, where they serve as instruments for the focusing of energy in the body. The anatomy of the chakras were described in indian and tibetan tantric literatures.
for example, the throat and brow centers of a talented singer or speaker will be much larger than the norm, as well as being brighter, more luminous and more rapidly spinning.
