Would people follow them as Gods (note that some misguided people do) as they do with Jesus?

I believe that Lao Tzu, Jesus, Buddha and every other prophet and sage in history were not divine-just human like you and I.

Some had nefarious means, others wanted to save the world and some where just out of their minds.

So if Lao Tzu and Buddha had claimed divinity, would they have been taken seriously?
Lao Tzu and Buddha both spoke of practically all the virtues that Jesus did-but only in Jesus (as far as these three are concerned) was the claim of divinity made.

So if you take away the parts about Heaven and Hell, Reward and Punishment-Jesus and Lao Tzu are almost parrallel.

So, do you think that Jesus actually claimed divinity-or was this later attributed to him (as some followers of Lao Tzu and Buddha did of them).

After all, none of us were around when the Bible was written were we?
I’m a follower of the moral codes of Lao Tzu and Buddha, which means I read their works and disregard any one who tries to claim that they were divine.

Brilliant and wise-yes. Divine-no.
So you would have followed me if I claimed divinity then?

  • I live in Asia.

    Millions of Buddhists no longer practice the original Buddhism but instead, ascribe divinity to Buddha, and worship him and pray to him like a god.

    Buddhists in HK, Singapore, China, Thailand, Malaysia seek him, pray to him, ask him for blessings and offer him sacrifices.

    In Asia, Taoists do not focus on Lao Tzu at all. Taoism in Asia today has many gods from Chinese folklore, legends etc.

    Taoism and Buddhism are usually mixed together for Buddhists and Taoists in Asia.

    I was a follower of both Taoism and Buddhism before I became a Christian 6 years ago.

    If you have been to Asia and gone to the Taoist/Buddhist temples, you will see Buddha statues sitting beside many other Taoist chinese legendary gods.

    EDIT+++++

    Jesus claimed divinity. That was why I decided to convert.

    Below are the verses.

    Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Mt 28:18-20)

    All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him. (Mt 11:27)

    Jesus said:
    I and my Father are one. John 10:30

    And Thomas answered and said unto him [Jesus], My Lord and my God. John 20:28

    For in him [Jesus] dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Colossians 2:9

    Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. John 8:58 (In the Old Testament, Jews describe GOD as the GREAT I AM. Jesus made this claim too)

    John 17:5 tells us Jesus said; “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”

    EDIT++++++++

    No I would not follow you. Jesus fulfilled OT testaments. People followed Him when He was on earth because of His wisdom, miracles and power to love.

    I followed Christ because He said He died for the world. Christianity made the most sense of all to me. From the beginning, I know God created everything, and created me, untl the end, He is still God and He will come back for me.

  • I think so. Some people do claim divinity in the Buddha and Lao Tzu and follow the respective religions as such.
