@@@@@What exactly is consciousness?

For a writing class, I need to write a 3 page paper on consciousness, but I’m stuck on the second paragraph wondering which direction I should take.
I’m not asking anyone to write the paper for me, but what are some questions that I should consider while I finish this paper?
I’m allowed to say that there is a higher consciousness, but I am not allowed to preach any particular religion, so please, don’t discuss God or Jesus in your answer.
I’m trying to make this interesting and descriptive – this is the final paper for my writing class.
Thank you in advance.
I believe in God, but I can’t use God in my explanation. Thanks for your answer though – I appreciate it. 🙂

Include perception in your paper and you will see some real interesting things. For example, does one hear (perceive) when in a coma and ‘unconscious’. Some people report hearing everything that went on in the hospital room except when they were ‘asleep’. So, they are ‘unconscious’ due to a coma induced by some injury or illness, and still had periods of being asleep and awake.

This is your mind contemplating its environment.

Consciousness is an emergent property of the brain.

If I can’t discuss God in my answer then I cant give you an honest answer.
The conscience is the knowledge of good and evil which God has put in man (Pr. 20:27; Ro. 2:15). The Greek word, suneidesis, means “a knowing with oneself.” “It denotes an abiding consciousness whose nature it is to bear witness to the subject regarding his own conduct in a moral sense (Tit. 1:15). … Conscience, accordingly, is the awareness man has of Himself in his relation to God, manifesting itself in the form of a testimony that is the result of the action of the spirit in the heart” (Zodhiates). The consci ence (1) must be cleansed by the blood of Christ (He. 9:14; 12:22); (2) convicts of sin (Jn. 8:9; Ro. 2:15); (3) should be kept pure and void of offense (Ac. 23:1; 24:16; 1 Ti. 1:5,19; 3:9; 2 Ti. 1:3; 1 Pe. 3:16); (4) motivates the Christian to do right (Ro. 13:5; 1 Pe. 2:19); (5) can be seared (1 Ti. 4:2); (6) can be defiled (Tit. 1:15); (7) can be weak (1 Co. 8:12). The Bible also uses terms such as “spirit” (Pr. 20:27) and “heart” (1 Jn. 3:19-21) to refer to the conscience of man. Pr. 20:27 says the spirit of man is God’s candle to search the inward parts. How to have a good conscience: (1) Salvation (He. 12:22). (2) Baptism (1 Pe. 3:21). (3) Diligent obedience to the Bible (He. 5:14; 13:18; 2 Co. 1:12). (4) Faith in God’s Word (1 Ti. 1:19). (5) Exercise to keep the conscience clear before God through obedience to His Word (Ac. 24:16).

The problem with the question is that we just don’t know.
Biological psychologists have researched this question extensively. There’s no clear answer yet — and there may never be.
Rene Descartes, the philosopher, thought that we were of a dual nature. That is, that we had a physical brain and an immaterial consciousness. Modern science discounts this theory, but doesn’t have a cohesive alternative.
The question is whether or not a bundle of individual nerve cells can collectively have personality and consciousness. Certainly we can make machines to make decisions, to explore their environment, to interact with the world around them — but are they conscious? It would seem they are not.
Are animals conscious? Certainly. But are insects? Yes, we think so. Plants? Probably not. Single-celled animals? almost certainly not. Where does consciousness “begin?” Is it related to intelligence? Is consciousness a black and white either/or proposition, or are there degrees of consciousness?
There are a lot of ways to go with your paper, but unfortunately not many definitive answers.

well off the top of my head consciousness is a mode our brains can be in. it is what tells us we are alive and lets us notice things about the world we wouldn’t normally acknowledge in another mode. It is what we use to tell ourselves what we need or are going to do. Consciousness can come in many different levels. Some people are unconscious while others are barely conscious at all, then there are those who are actually aware of what and where they are, and even then there is certainly a highest form of consciousness, which immerges itself in the truth and all other beings capable of any at all seek to become as it is so that they may understand everything around them.

consciousness is awareness of the Spiritual Being and being analytical as far as being in the present. When not being in the present, a Being can be looking at past experiences in his mind and not be very analytical and have accidents. Taking drugs or too much alcohol is a good example of a person being out of present time and not being very analytical. This person is less conscious, less aware. and less analytical than he would be in a sober state…
