hw question.. analyze the following example of communication failure, what went wrong? my question to teacher.. ((how do you analyze when you dont know what it means??))
This looks like some sign/notice that can be seen in a youth-hostel in a non-english speaking country and simply means “Don’t walk in the corridors in climbing boots during rest time” or “Don’t walk in the corridors with climbing boots on at night time (when people are sleeping)”. People often use online language translators (another language to english and vice versa) and come up with translations such as this. Hilarious 🙂
to perambulate = formal way of saying “to walk”
hours of repose = rest time/night time (time when people are resting or sleeping)
boots of ascension = weird way to say: climbing boots (boots for hill-walking/climbing)

I’m not trying to be a wise guy, but every word in that sentence is in the dictionary. If you look them up and replace them with a simpler word, you’ll see what they’re trying to say means.
For example, ‘perambulate’ means ‘to walk or travel through’. ‘repose’ means ‘sleep’, so ‘hours of repose’ probably means night time.
I’ll leave the rest up to you.

You can say what went wrong is that all of the words made sense or had meaning as did the sentence when put together but most people would not understand it. That is why is is a communication failure./
