what does siddhartha mean by when he uses the word ego? as a shramanan he uses ascetics to leave ego and explore atman. From my understanding atman, to simply put it, is the soul.
wikipedia discusses ego :
“The spiritual goal of many traditions involves the dissolving of the ego,[citation needed] allowing self-knowledge of one’s own true nature to become experienced and enacted in the world. This is variously known as Enlightenment, Nirvana, Presence, and the “Here and Now”.
what does that mean?

  1. “Here and Now” refers to the understanding that you cannot actually live in the future, AT THIS MOMENT. Nor can you live in the past at this moment. So the only time you have to do anything is now. If you are in college you only have today to study for your history midterm. If you are suffering because of a romantic breakup, constantly reminding yourself about the good times you had will not help you feel better now. Only doing, thinking, and feeling for today will let you create your best future.

  2. The dissolving of the ego = Humility.
Humility is needed to accept new knowledge, about your true place in the world…instead of fighting what you hear.
