What do you think about this, Atheists and Believers?

An atheist strikes up an inevitable conversation with his religious friend.
“YOU?RE RELIGIOUS AREN?T YOU?”
“Yes.?
“SO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD?”
“Absolutely.”
“IS GOD GOOD?”
“Sure! God’s good.”
“IS GOD ALL-POWERFUL, CAN HE DO ANYTHING?”
“Yes.”
“ARE YOU GOOD OR EVIL?”
“I am a sinner, so I am evil.?
The atheist grins knowingly.
?HERE?S ONE FOR YOU. LET?S SAY THERE?S A SICK PERSON OVER HERE AND YOU CAN CURE HIM. YOU CAN DO IT. WOULD YOU HELP HIM? WOULD YOU TRY??
“Yes, I would.”
“SO YOU?RE GOOD!”
“I wouldn’t say that.”
?BUT WHY NOT SAY THAT? YOU?D HELP A SICK AND MAIMED PERSON IF YOU COULD. MOST OF US WOULD IF WE COULD. BUT GOD DOESN?T.?
His friend does not answer, so the atheist continues.
?HE DOESN?T, DOES HE? MY BROTHER WHO WAS RELIGIOUS DIED OF CANCER, EVEN THOUGH HE PRAYED TO GOD TO HEAL HIM. HOW IS THIS GOOD? CAN YOU ANSWER THAT ONE??
His friend remains silent.
?YOU CAN?T, CAN YOU??
The atheist rethinks his argument.
?LET?S START AGAIN, IS GOD GOOD??
?Yes.?
?IS SATAN GOOD??
?No.?
?THEN WHERE DOES SATAN COME FROM??
??From God..?
?IS THERE EVIL IN THE WORLD??
“Yes.”
?AND GOD MADE EVERYTHING, CORRECT??
“Yes.”
?THEN IF GOD CREATED EVERYTHING, AND SINCE EVIL EXISTS, ACCORDING TO THE PRINCIPLE THAT OUR WORKS DEFINE WHO WE ARE THEN GOD IS EVIL.?
Again, his friend of faith had no answer.
?IS THERE SICKNESS? IMMORALITY? HATRED? UGLINESS? ALL THESE TERRIBLE THINGS, DO THEY EXIST IN THIS WORLD??
“Yes.”
?SO TELL ME WHO CREATED THEM??
No answer again, so the atheist repeats his question but is still no answer. Suddenly the atheist breaks away to pace, feeling confident in his argument.
His friend stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own.
“Tell me, is there such thing as heat?”
?YES, THERE?S HEAT.?
“And is there such a thing as cold?”
?YES, THERE?S ALSO COLD.?
“No, there isn’t.”
The atheist gives a curious look to his friend.
“You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don’t have anything called ‘cold’. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees.?
?Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, just the absence of it.”
Silence in the room made the drop on a pen sound like a hammer. His friend continues.
“What about darkness, is there such a thing as darkness?”
?YES. WHAT IS NIGHT WITHOUT DARKNESS??
“You’re wrong again. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? That’s the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?”
“SO WHAT POINT ARE YOU MAKING??
“Yes. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.”
The atheist?s face cannot hide his surprise this time.
“FLAWED? CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW??
“You are working on the premise of duality,” his friend explains. “You argue that there is life and then there’s death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Science can’t even explain a thought.”
“It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.”
“Now, is there such a thing as evil?”
?OFCOURSE THERE IS, WE SEE IT EVERYDAY. IT IS IN THE DAILY EXAMPLE OF MAN?S INHUMANITY TO MAN. IT IS IN THE MULTITUDE OF CRIME AND VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD. THESE MANIFESTATIONS ARE NOTHING ELSE BUT EVIL.?
To this the friend replied, “Evil does not exist, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”
The atheist was silenced.

  1. You are trying to convince that there is only one thing(God) similar to heat and light and evil does not exist because it is simply absence of God.
What a pity. Do you read newspaper? Every newspaper is full of deceit, oppression, rape, lies, murders and all kind of crimes. Do you think that these dont exist at all. See the truth- Buddha says — in everything.
Newspapers tell you that the world is full of sorrow, pain and grief — its a hard truth. Plz dont ignore this. Buddha builds his teaching on this FACT, that the world is full of evil. So how can its creator be good at all.
Rather , Buddha , alone in the entire world claims that the so called God must be an evil one. How can it be good where one creature is murdering other creature and consuming its physical body to sustain itself. Imagine as a mother, you give birth to many children and one day you fins that one child ate up another one to satisfy his hunger. Look around , big fish eats small fish. Do you think the small fish is happy about it.
No wake up from what theists tell you. See the truth that violence is everywhere , its the nature of various creatures. So how can the creator be called as good. Simple logic. But your deep attachment to your traditional beliefs will prevent you to see this truth , rather you will accuse me as bad, but Buddha is only trying to make you see the truth, plain truth. As it is. Leave your beliefs behind for they make you prejudiced and cover your intellect from seeing.

  2. Ya know, I’m not even going to answer such an obvious copy&paste job. You’re not going to read the answers and you’re not going to take any of our opinions to heart, even if we are correct when picking apart your statement.

  3. Curious how you managed such a long question…I always run out of room long before that long!
I noted how a lot of today’s people have no patience, or interest in really thinking. It is easy to reject what you do not wish to hear and have to grapple with by saying it is too long, or making other fun of it. Common defenses of those with no answers, and who are afraid to really know.
I was interested in the logic, and see some validity, and noted that even after reading some missed that we have names for the absence of things, as as with light or heat, darkness and cold have no degree per se.
In general, I saw no real refutation, just irritation, impatience, and rejection without good logic behind it.
I think you really made your point, even against all the opposition. Though I wished some of those who “know” differently had given as clear and straightforward an explanation of the other way they think. See if it was as rigorous!!
    Keep up the good work!!
Of course, your argument can also be used to prove the absence of varying degrees of Evil is what we call good, so as a proof it is not as easily quantified as heat and light. We do not have an objective something we can measure and hold that is “Good”, or “Evil” for that matter. But we can conceptualize from your illustration. If folks wish to think.

  4. It looks like an imaginary conversation between a theist and a stereotype of an easily beaten atheist.
It bears little or no resemblance to anything likely to be said by any atheist – a daydream debate, to be completely honest.
    Clues:
    1) One party is all-knowing and skillfully guides the conversation.
    2) The other party consistently reacts in a way that makes the person playing the theist feel superior. It also plays right into their hands – something that very rarely happens in real conversations.
    3) A short conversation later, an entire viewpoint is silenced! Furthermore, it is done by just making some unsupported assertions, which the opponent would never accept.
Think about it. The entire conclusion is saying “evil is the absence of God” – but this is just pulled out of nowhere. Evil could be anything else – it is just not covered at any point.

  5. It would have been better if some here had remained silenced. But they chose to speak instead, and offered no rebuttal.
That which is not of faith is sin.
That which is not of God is evil.
The beginning of wisdom is the fear (respect) of God.

  6. “Something” and “not something” is still dualism. You want so badly to describe monism, but you can’t swallow the pill that “all is one” because it would render all the threats of eternal punishment and tireless supplications on your knees to a separate and angry God moot.
Carol was silenced (probably because she copied this from someone’s blog and didn’t even bother to read it before pasting it on Answers).

  7. i’ve seen this before only it was a college professor and a student. it’s a bullsh*t thing. and the arguments there suck and are premeditated. usually atheists win debates because the religious has to result to ridiculous ideas that may as well admit defeat.

  8. What do I think? I think you wrote a freakin’ long wad of dialogue disguised as a short story. Please don’t give up your day job.
    😀
    .

  9. What’s more worrying than the Christians who spend valuable time thinking up nonsense like this, are the Christians who genuinely believe it proves something.
    .

  10. Atheist pretend that there is no God because they want an excuse to do what they want….wickedness. IM me and ask me the same questions up there. I’ll have an answer for everything. EVERYTHING. The atheist was silenced. hahaha

  11. Wow did you copy and paste this all by your self. How about coming up with an original argument and then we will talk. God Killed more people in the bible than the devil did. Explain that one moron. Until them have fun with your imaginary friend.

  12. ?YES, THERE?S HEAT.?
“And is there such a thing as cold?”
Too easy to see where this is going. I’ll pass. If all you can do to prove theism is through analogies and silly stories like this, I can do without.

  13. so no one is evil ?
there are no evil acts ?
so murderers and pedophiles arent really bad … they are just absent from God ?
    ok

  14. Did anyone actually bother to read this? I’m an atheist, have never asked anyone about their faith and don’t know any atheists who do.
From where she pasted this homily, I care not.
