What can happen to solar energy before it enters the earth's atmosphere?

one of the following:
absorbed by the earth’s surface
radiated back out from the surface
reflected at the thermopause
reflected by clouds

  1. Simple enough. The earth’s surface is BENEATH the atmosphere, so that rules out being radiated or absorbed. Same thing with clouds. The thermopause, however, is at the very top of the atmosphere. So, it’s that one. 😀

  2. Reflected at the thermopause (the upper surface of the atmosphere). Not a good answer, but none of the others fit the question.

  3. 1. Earth’s surface is covered with atmosphere.
    2. Same as above.
    3. This one.
    4. Clouds are also inside Earth’s atmosphere.
By process of elimination, it’s clear the answer is 3. Thermopause represents the outer edge of Earth’s atmosphere, the point beyond which there are essentially no heavier molecules.
