What breathing related states induce changes in consciousness?

I was sort of thinking along the lines of carbon dioxide narcosis, ‘pure’ oxygen?, pressure changes in atmosphere (underwater nitrogen narcosis), hyperventilation, nitrous oxide. I’m sure there are a lot more, what other types of breathing-related conditions induce conscious changes? I want to know so I can write an article about breathing.

  1. Hi. One extreme is trying to breath in space. A more survivable case is breathing on top of very high mountains, in non-pressurized aircraft, in a submerged vessel, etc. All pressure related.Just as an aside, the cause of death by crucifixion is suffocation.
