There are only four? Sleep alone supposedly has 5….

Jessie c

LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
The first is SLEEP.
One is asleep in the bed, under the influence of an anesthetic, under the influence of toxicity in the body from adaptation, or in a state of coma. In the state of sleep, obviously one is not responsible. One doesn’t do very much and only dreams go on, if anything. Some of the dreams are not recalled, some are recalled. They are merely the Not-I’s playing and are totally in sleep. I is asleep and I must sleep now and then. One finds that I uses tremendous amounts of energy in observing and must go to sleep. However, it does not have to sleep for years and it has been in a hypnotic sleep for many years.
The second level of consciousness is called WAKING SLEEP.
In other words, the person appears to be awake, walks about, does all the daily chores, writes books, teaches college courses, performs surgery, repairs automobiles, cooks meals, builds buildings and all sorts of things, but this is a walking sleep or waking sleep because one is in a conditioned state and responds to the same mechanical responses. Buttons can bepushed.
The third state of consciousness is called SELF-AWARENESS.
This is awareness of the self of paying attention to the self as object. It is the one we have recently started on; it is a new state of consciousness. It is seeing the “self,” “John” or “Mary” as object. It is not condemning or justifying. It is an observer simply being aware of the “self.” This is a new state of looking at things, a new way of being, actually, from anything that we have ever known. We have always said I to everything.
The fourth level of consciousness is called OBJECTIVE AWARENESS or

The fourth level of consciousness is called OBJECTIVE AWARENESS or
OBJECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS.
One sees everything freely without identifying with anything, without having any “ideal”to compare it to or to look to. It is seeing everything objectively, reporting to X, and X does all the work. This is, of course, is a state of consciousness that we may not experience for some time.
These states of consciousness are not something one can “do.”
They are something one experiences as the various Not-I’s, the bits of conditioning, are rendered inoperative by X from the conscious paying attention to the “self” as an “object. This is really the only thing one can do. The other states occur. In the states of being which are existent in each of these states of consciousness, there are three basic “states of being.”

awareness, ego, self, waking are four.
I can, but will not.

Rean John Uehara

The Subconscious – this is where we’re doing a thing without even realizing it. Just like when we are breathing. Sleeping. The inner you.
The Conscious state – this is the state where you are widely awake, and is conscious of, limited to, what you are only focused on.
The SuperConscious state – This is where we are widely awake, meaning, to the supreme level of sensitivity to your spirit.
(I think there are only 3…)
but..
The Christ Consciousness – the state where you feel that you are one with the world.

Ok,
1) Sober, you’re nervous because you don’t know anyone.
2) Slightly buzzed, still nervous, but not ashamed to stare at women.
3) Very buzzed, blatantly hitting on women ends in complete failure but that doesn’t discourage you.
4) Drunk, you’re making out with someone you’re not supposed to in front of everyone but you don’t care because you believe you’re invisible.

good question****
Unfortunately there are too many people with shallow beliefs that will discard this question.
So, at the risk of sounding trendy, exucute everyone that is a beliver

I have to take exception to your use of the definate article “The” in your question. I want to reword it as thus:
“What are four levels of consciousness?” Why? Because I happen to know of more then only four levels. The first four, as discussed in Quabbalah are those which make up the lowest levels of human existance in what can otherwise be underestood as being Spiritually asleep.

1. Un-conscious….Like after being hit in the head with a baseball …..ZZZZZZZ…
2. Semi-conscious….Like being asked to answer a question from a teacher, when you were studying the students shoes next to you …Usual response sounds like .>>>>… HUH ..???
3.Conscious objections…>>> You want me to shoot WHO??…and where Will you be again..>>>Behind me supporting me all the way huh?? …OK >>>CANADA>>>>>>
4.Conscious Decisions…..I believe… I will have the apple turnover with the vanilla ice cream….

There are four states of consciousness called Avastas in vedic knowledge.
1) jagrat, the waking state;
2) svapna, the dream state; astral consciousness
3) sushupti, the state of dreamless sleep; and, highest, subsuperconsciousness,
4) the turiya, consciousness on interior planes.
You can overcome these states by enchanting aum kara
Akara overcomes Jagrat
Ukara overcomes svapna
Makara overcomes sushupti
Turiya by amatra …
Will explain in detail

The four levels of consciousness are –
1.The lower curve represents the Gross, Conscious, Waking state level, called Vaishvanara. (A of OM Mantra)
2. The center curve represents the Subtle, Unconscious, and Dreaming level, called Taijasa. (U of OM Mantra)
3. The upper curve represents the Causal, Subconscious, and Deep Sleep level, called Prajna. (M of OM Mantra)
4.The dot, point, or bindu represents the fourth state, the absolute consciousness, which encompasses, permeates, and is the other three, and is called Turiya. (Silence after A, U, and M of OM Mantra)-

I have more than four, at least from my understanding and reading………they are as follows:
(in low to high order)………
shame
guilt
apathy
grief
fear
desire
anger
pride
courage
neutrality
willingness
acceptance
reason
love
joy
peace
enlightenment
We move in and out of these levels constantly, but generally have a predominant or normal level. Most person’s seeking personal and spiritual growth would fall between courage and reason…….and then pursue higher levels.
This does not assume that people begin at shame, although some do. I can summarize them for you, although they are fairly self explanatory, and that would be rather lengthly….
or you could reference the book “Power vs. Force”, David R. Hawkins.
Oops, well I see I might be completely off base with the “type” of answer you were looking for, I guess maybe I should start reading other answerer’s posts before I answer?…….but I always think that may influence my answer and don’t in general want that to happen……if that makes sense?
Oh well, it was an honest attempt, and good information in the pursuit of enlightenment.
** Cekker Kwann, is correct, look at the first four states above.

Starting from the gross to the more subtle aspect we have the physical body upon which the senses dwell, and in which we have the waking state of consciousness. In the astral body we house the dreaming sleep state of consciousness. Within the etheric body we have deep sleep state of consciousness. The fourth state of consciousness is called cosmic consciousness. Cosmic meaning all inclusive. Its presents in the first three states of consciousness, and remains aware. The main command thread running through all states is the witness. There are seven states of consciousness available to humankind.

lalachi

1.the conscious mind when you are wide awake.[Beta level]
2.The sub conscious mind, alittle deep [alpha level] meditating on the agna, pituitary gland.
3.The collective conscious mind [theeta level] thuria, meditating on the pineal gland.
