What are the benefits of meditation?

I might start learning how to meditate, what will I gain from this? Any hints or tips on how to achieve a higher level of understanding?

  1. Meditation alone won’t help you understand the mysteries of the Universe.
All meditation is is a way of relaxing and clearing your head of the busy day.
It is a healthy habit to start, because you are sitting up straight and breathing deeply, bringing in a lot of clean oxygen for your body. It can also help you spiritually because you are taking yourself out of the day and just relaxing, and once you are done you go about the rest of your being productive and positive which, in a way, does give some higher level of understanding.
No, you will not start to float :]

  2. Meditation is very personal and different for every individual.
There are a number of techniques you can try to find the right fit for you.
“The Idiots Guide the Meditation” or “Meditation for Dummies” offer a great overview
and will help to educate you on what it is all about.
Also, despite the fact I wrote that it is personal, it does not mean you have to do it alone.
You might check into seeing if there are any guided meditation groups in your area.
    This can really be helpful.
I’ve been meditating for about 20 years now and it does take patience and practice.
I believe it is well worth it on many levels.
Helps to maintain an even temperament and peaceful attitude, controls stress, is good for your health (mental and physical) and makes life very sweet to stop and just be in your moment.
    Good luck and Namaste.

  3. It’s not so much what you gain but what you loose:
    – you loose the anxiety, feverishness in the mind, wasting energy into useless thoughts
worrying about what other people think about you, chasing one thing after the next, in the hope that it will bring you some lasting fulfillment, which never happens.
Basically everything you do in your life is determined by your mind, by taking action on your thoughts. If your mind is not peaceful, is always trying to get something, then you will experience a lot of disturbance in your life. Granted after a while you start to consider this disturbance as normal.
Meditation, when learned and practiced with a proper understanding and right attitude, meaning one of genuine respect, basically is the settling in of your mind. Once the mind settles and becomes less agitated you are at peace. From this space you are able to act in your day to day life and the choices you make create a reality for you that is full of contentment. i dont know how else to put it.
You need to experiences this, by taking a class and follow with consistent practice. It is probably the most useful thing you can do for yourself and the others. I’m saying this because just having an understanding of this process does not itself have any benefit. I Have done these breathing and mediation practices for a few years now, and the difference in my life is just amazing.
Give it a try and no mater what keep at it.
    Good luck
