Not elegantly put but a reasonable question.
The Dalai Lama is head of the Tibetan Buddhist Hierarchy and was exiled from his homeland by China as a threat to stability when they imposed their ‘Rightful’ claim to Tibet. The issue is one of religious tolerance but the Tibetans see the Dalai Lama as the ‘Leader’ of Tibet.
Because one day China will decide whether or not you get to eat. And they need to become at least a fledgling democracy before then. Tibet is an important touch stone and has the ability through the Dalai Lama to put pressure on the Chinese leadership through historical cultural links in a way that the ‘West’ cannot.
It is why the Chinese have already chosen a different ‘Dalai Lama’ in training as the next reincarnation to neutralise the problem.
England is part of the problem in Tibet. THis problem dates back to a failed invasion by the English into Chinese territory. England fed propaganda into India that Tibet belongs to them and they still believes it. China is afraid of an invasion from that area and has militarize the region tha has upset the locals. Dalai Lama’s association with India has made matters worse.
Referendum on separation and independence of Tibet could have answer and no Brown should not get into a Brown Study about The Dalai Lama. There is also the point of hypocrisy on the part of Dalai Lama, U.S., as one has a two party system compared to the Communist economic system. One has a spiritual system.
