I have read about Buddhism and I find it fascinating. I also have took quite a liking towards the fat buddha or future buddha. I was wondering is it possible to worship him without following buddhism? I know he is not a god or anything a buddhists don’t worship him but really can’t you worship anything? I just need answers here.
Anything can be worshiped. But worship of the only true God and Creator is the only worship of value and the only course that leads to perfect everlasting life.
(Psalm 83:18) That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.
(Matthew 4:10) Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”
(John 17:3) This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.
(Revelation 4:11) “You are worthy, Jehovah, even our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created.”
He was not the original buddha.
He is looked upon as the “laughing buddha”. (jolly)
The teachings of the buddha are to be studied and practiced.
To worship buddha is to not understand the teachings.
Buddha is a teacher, not a god.
To worship a buddha would be like praying to the god of the sock basket.
But, you can indeed worship what ever makes you feel one with all things.. By all means, worship away. Just know that buddha would not want you to waste your time on such a pointless thing.
You answered your own question – Buddha never claimed to be a deity. Therefore, would not be happy about people “worshiping” him.
You can worship anything or anyone you choose, as you said. Are you seeking our permission?
Buddhism is a philosophy and way of life that can be followed without necessarily having the extra trappings of religion. It is a disciplined way of life that can’t really be followed frivolously. How sincere are you?
Perhaps, study some more. Talk to some Buddhist monks and then see how you feel.
this “fat buddha” is NOT a true representation of the historical “buddha”…
If you want to see a representation of the historical “buddha” that is closer to the truth please have a look at the picture (see first link below)
Anyway “buddha” is NOT a proper name like David or John, it is just a Sanskrit adjective that means “awakened” so anyone can be “awakened” ie to find again our true nature and therefore be a “buddha”… In fact there are already countless “buddhas” all around us, but most people do not recognize them as “buddhas” believing them to be ordinary beings.
The teachings of the historical “buddha” do not ask us to worship him, but instead to try to follow his advices on ethics, meditation and the pratice of the ten virtues (paramita) (see fifth link below)
I have put online in October 1996 some webpages on Buddhism that could help you (second to fourth links below)
I have been told that people need something, a form or an image, to hold hold on to in times of worship. Whether it is a stone, light, cross or image, it serves the same purpose. The choice is yours. you don’t have to be an Italian to eat pizza and you don’t have to be a Buddhist to honour Buddha. Choose what is closest to your heart.
