I was in a Gurdjieff group for about 10 years. I left my group when I felt I had lost interest. Never did anyone ever treat me poorly or try to coerce me back into the group. The leaders of my group were nothing but kind. The other members of my group taught me a lot. I don’t miss it and am not likely to return. But neither do I resent anyone nor do I feel misled in any way.
Lots of people try to leave cults like these and are punished for it. Most people go crazy long before they leave. It’s difficult to leave. The Gurdjieff groups alive today are all criminals. You need to speak to a family member that you can trust and explain the damage you have suffered. Try the Rick Ross website. Unfortunately they are a very strong underground organization that can find you where .ever you are if they really want you. They are like the Mafia or FBI. You should never have gotten involved with them. The lies and propaganda that they put on the internet makes them come across as good and nice people. Remember the old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.” Good luck. I hope you make it out alive.
First I will give my experience. I spent over 12 years with the Foundation in San Francisco. At some point, I felt I needed to give attention to other things, especially after a death in the family. I left. Nobody coerced me to stay or tried to pressure me other than a few folks saying they would miss me. I spent a few years away, moved to a new state and eventually made contact with a much smaller group in my new state. Gurdjieff groups simply do not have the means to coerce people like a big organization has. Most of the groups are being run by people who make no money from their involvement.
That said, I could understand that some groups could become abusive. Gurdjieff left a somewhat open-source philosophy, meaning one could approach it in very different ways. Gurdjieff wanted people to ask questions, to think for themselves and to not follow things they did not understand. Thus there is not a set of rules that he left to dictate how a group should be run. Anyone could effectively start a “Gurdjieff” group and some of those who have started groups were not qualified. Like any human organization, there can be some pretentiousness and/or rigidity that creeps in. However, if you are having problems leaving, that in itself may be the best reason to leave. If you even have to ask the question about how to leave then you need help and need to get away. Ask someone in your local area for help. If you don’t have anyone to talk to in your local area, you might consider what is holding you there.
I have been around the Gurdjieff Foundation for years. I am not a member, but since I had studied Sufism and Zen we had many things in common. I have attended work days, functions, meetings, and even took a retreat. I know many of the elders in the Foundation, and have had absolutely nothing negative happen at all. I come and go as I please, have not given them money, and have stayed on good terms with them, even when I tell them no, that I will not be attending. They never call, never coerce, and have never seen anything that exhibits cult dynamics, anymore than any other religion, or atheism for that matter.
Does one get to bang various hot girls in this particular cult? I’m looking to join one such cult, sounds like a good time.
Well perhaps its our own psychology which hurts us in the end and not anyone else ? I say perhaps because I’m not sure . I was in FOF and later the Institute and a lot of my experiences were completley horrific and if not that then very unpleasant psychic experiences .
However , maybe , these were due to my own projections projecting back on myself . And this being the case others would experience similar and from this point of view it reveals just how difficult the 4th way is, and the only person that it worked for 100% was Mr. G.
I have never had any problems what-so -ever with the group. I do not feel they are a cult at all but a group of people who come together to study his teachings. I have never seen anything that you describe in 30 years of studying his ideas with the Two River Farm folks. The Fellowship of Friends appears to have some problems. Criminals is a rediculous characterization of these people. They are not an underground organization but open to anybody who whsh to share in the ideas.. If any of these “criminals” that you speak about has a problem I certainly have absolutely no fear of them.
there is no such thing a a ‘cult’ of gurdjieff……that’s ridiculous…it’s like saying there is a cult of jesus or muhammed. Gurdjieff was just a man, an extraordinary one who possessed a ‘secret’ knowledge and was a teacher. If you understand anything of his teachings you should be able to work out whether and group purporting to use or follow his methods are genuine or not
I find this an interesting conversation, because I grew up partially a part of the work. I will not say where this is for anonymity, but where I was, there was nothing remotely like what poland7378 implies in the groups. Not forcing one into the work is one of core ideas of the work itself in my experience. Even for me, being raised while my parents were involved in the work, I was put under no pressure whatsoever. Basically what I am getting at is that in my experience, the work is an optional, peaceful practice.
Stay away from the gurdjieff foundation of NYC located at 123 east 63rd street they are a bunch of perverts.
Write expose’s, film their absurdity, secretly record them and expose them. They are like any other cult. You don’t need them, but they need you to survive. Cripple or hurt their income stream and best of all destroy them at every turn. If you can catch them “hurting you” you can get media attention which they hate. They hide behind seeming to be “cultural” and interested in good works. Read about them, have a friend who is in their grasp and she is ruined. All I can say is they are twisted.
LEAVE IF YOU WISH TO WITH NO FEAR, YOU WERE IN GURDJIEFF CULT & YOU DIDNT LEARN THE BASIC THING THAT NOTHING IS IN YOUR HAND, IT JUST HAPPENS. MAKE YOUR FEAR YOUR STRENGTH, FEAR KEEPS YOU ALERT, BE ALERT ALL THE TIME & YHE FEAR WILL GO. THEN NO ONE WILL TOUCH YOU.
