Shamanism and animals as message bearers?

A friend of mine was telling me that if animals or insects come into your life, according to Shamanism, they are trying to bring you a message. Does anyone know a website where it tells what message different beings bring?

  1. Actually, sometimes a blue jay is just a blue jay. What many people don’t take into account is the natural behavior of animals. For example, I know people who swear Hawk is their totem because they keep seeing hawks neat their home. However, there are two things to consider:
    1. Since the banning of DDT, raptors in general have been experiencing population boosts, especially in the past two decades
    2. Hawks are territorial, so if you keep seeing them, chances are you have a mated pair that has claimed your yard as part of their territory (they can adapt to smaller urban areas as well as wildland).
As far as specific messages, the best way to find out what a particular totem or animal spirit has to tell you is to meditate with it. I designed the following meditation not only to find your totem, but to work with totems in general:

Once you get to this part:
“At the end of the tunnel is another opening. As you pass through this opening, enter into a natural place in which you are very comfortable. It may be a large field, a forest, a snowy plain, a body of water, or the broad sky. Explore this place. Note what the natural flora is, what season and time of day it is and how you move through it. (One-two minutes.)”
call out the name of the animal you’re wanting to talk to (such as Crow, or Dog, or whatever animal you’ve seen). S/he should then appear if s/he has a message for you (or may just show up to tell you there is no message).
The problem with totem animal dictionaries is that they include information that was told to the authors, not to you. What Wolf tells me, for example, may not be what Wolf needs to tell you. So your best bet is to learn on your own.
I’ve written a number of essays on this topic, as well as a book. Good starting places are these three basic essays:

You can find more of my writings scattered throughout http://www.thegreenwolf.com/lupawriting.html . If you’re interested in shamanism in general, check out http://therioshamanism.com (and make sure you check the links on the left sidebar, too). And I’ve reviewed a ton of books on the topic at http://lupabitch.wordpress.com/category/animal-magic/
    Hope that helps 🙂
