Reiki Attunement required?

I have been studying reiki through various books for a couple months now. I’ve read through and practiced it on myself, my family, and my friends. Each book mentioned the attunement, but not in detail, and it made it seem like attunment happens when you begin reiki. So then i researched it and walah, apparently i’m supposed to be attuned before i am capable of practicing, but honestly, everyone I’ve given sessions to say that they feel immensly better than when we started. Is attunment required to truly practice reiki, or is it for only those who are unaware of their psychic abilities because Ive known all my life that I could sense things and I’ve occasionaly dreampt of future events, and even seen in the middle of the day, spirits that have passed.
ok, first of all im not speaking to demons, you moron, im not asking for anyone’s help with how ive adapted over the years to my connection with energies and things that most people can’t understand, and i have studied the practices of reiki, i know all about chakras, hand positions, and the origins of the whole practice itself, i am not a stupid person meddling with black magic, reiki is all healing through touch, all i want to know is if attunement is required because i have read in many texts that for people who truly wish to heal the person they are giving a session, attunment does not matter if you intentions are fueled by strong will and belief.

  • you are correct.

    we are already connected to the energy that is part of the system of Reiki – it’s the energy of life. Attunements are used to enhance the capacity of the student to sense and channel Reiki energy to themselves and others.

    some people develop the ability to do this without an attunement. that’s true. the attunement process was not developed by the founder of Reiki. It was put together by others to enhance the progress of their students.(If you’ve heard the name “Hayashi”, he’s the culprit).

    the people you have been working with might certainly be feeling sensations in their bodies when you are working with them. you might well be passing on ki to them. there is debate about this in the Reiki community but most would agree that to call what you are practising Reiki would not be quite right. Reiki is a system made up of five basic components:
    * attunements
    * hands-on energy work
    * breathing or meditaion practices
    * symbols and mantras (in higher levels of study)
    * the precepts for wellbeing

    If one of these elements is lacking, then what you are doing is not Reiki. It would probably be better to call if “Ki Work”. The energy is the same but you are using it within a different system.(you can’t call it a chocolate cake if there is no chocolate in it)

    you have, no doubt, read about all of the elements of the system of Reiki and they can all be practised with ease on your own – except for the attunement. maybe you’re even doing some meditations and hands on work but for it to be called Reiki the attunements(s) is necessary.

    any hands on work you do with yourself and others may still be extremely effective and productive, as you’re working with the same energy. If you would like the level 1 reiki attunements or just someone to communicate with further regaring reiki (in person if you live nearby or via distance if you’re far away), feel free to email me – lokigaiaus@yahoo.com

    i hope my answer has been of some use to you

  • Who gave Mikao Usui his attunement?

    “In 1914 Usui undertook a meditation retreat so he might receive an answer to some problems he was having in his life. We believe he might have included, as part of his focus, his “vow” in this retreat / request. As the story has it, Usui went to a meditation spot at Mount Kurama-yama and undertook an intensive practice utilizing some the practices he had studied. During his “satori” experience, he came to the realization of how working with divine “Ki” energy might assist him in some of his difficulties. Eventually, through the years of study and practice Usui was able to meld together a method for bringing the essence of these Buddhist practices together in a way he could work with. Later on, it became known as Reiki.

    He first practiced his newly discovered method on himself and friends. It is said that he may have possibly exchanged his knowledge, techniques and ideas with Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of Akiko), Onasiburo Deguchi (founder of the Omoto religion), and Toshihiro Eguchi. As time went on, he began to offer this healing method to the residents of Kyoto. This gave him an opportunity to perfect and refine his new healing method. Meanwhile, he continued to hold regular meetings for his growing circle of Buddhist followers, and further developed and refined his system.”

    Yes, It is very possible to get an attunement without anyone’s intervention.

  • slight disclaimer on my opinion.
    I am not trained and do not practice reiki in any way, I have read a little about the basics.

    now, i have read something on here that was later removed of someone having had some “problems” because of having been reiki attuned, and while I wasn’t entirely confident in the accuracy of what was said, it seems interesting.

    you certainly do *not* have to be “attuned” to that method or any such thing in order to heal via psychic energy, do auric manipultaion/adjustment, ect. IMO the idea that you would *have* to do it THEIR way, and so on, is very suspicious and peculiar.

    I do not know if what you have been doing would count as reiki or not. but really, does that matter? I mean, its a title/name. what something is called only goes so far.

    what you *may* be doing, reiki or not, is in essence, by getting something “close” allowing a part of you that knows more than you conciously do, to enact what you are going for through a way that is not neccesarily bound to the method that people might commonly attach a name to.

    I hope that makes sense and is of use to you.

    edit: and no offense, but I am skeptical of BlueJuliet’s opinion. it “seems” to me to be a very “old” perspective, that it is not considering for how …. gifted, some of our (I get the feeling your mid-20’s?) generation are. I think “accidental” attunement, or the equivalent, *is* more likely/possible than some might think.

  • Reiki (霊気 or レイキ, Reiki? IPA: /ˈreɪkiː/) is a spiritual practice used as a complementary therapy developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui. After three weeks of fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama, in Japan, Usui claimed to receive the ability of ‘healing without energy depletion’. Practitioners use a technique similar to the laying on of hands, which they say will channel “healing energy” (a form of ki) through their palms. Neither the existence of ki nor any mechanism for its manipulation are scientifically accepted, and the evidence base does not support the efficacy of reiki or its recommendation for use in treatment

    ‘The Seven Spirits’ of ‘The Truth of Love’ may flow forth –
    first, into and through the earth of our ‘body- temples’,
    and in turn, beyond- into the Mass Consciousness –
    by letting the capacities of body, mind, and heart
    be clear channels of Spiritual Expression

    The watch-word of all ‘Attunement Servers’ is…

    “Let Love radiate, without concern for results.”

  • Maybe the people you practiced on said they felt better because they didn’t want to hurt your feelings.
    You can’t actually accomplish Reiki until you’ve been attuned. That’s an important part of being able to channel the healing energy, regardless of how spiritual you are.

    Self-attunment is possible, but you have to do it intentionally.
