My dad has to take a home fecal occult test, should I be worried?

My dad had a medical last week, and I have just found a fecal occult test on his desk. Should I be worried? Do they give lots of people these home tests? Is there a problem? I don’t want to ask him, so I just wondered if someone could give me some info?

  1. All over 40’s are asked to do one of these tests each year as a screening test for bowel cancer, so if your dad has been for a medical it is likely the doctor did a full examination including urine tests, maybe blood test, and this fecal occult test. So it is probably routine and nothing to worry about.

  2. My mum and dad were the same – they had to do them for a medical check up. Its just routine and its good that the Drs are checking all aspects of his health. Why not just ask him if your worried im sure he will put your mind at ease.

  3. Fecal occult blood testing is used for colon cancer screening. The cards screen your colon for microscopic blood. If the test comes back negative (no blood) then you father should get a flex sig (which is a shorter version of a colonoscopy) every 5 years and do the stool cards yearly. If the test comes back positive (has blood in it) then he will need to get a full colonoscopy. However, if your father has a family history of colon cancer, polyps or has any unusual bowel habits (like diarrhea or constipation) or has seen blood in his stool then he should get a colonoscopy and not even bother with the stool cards.
So, it is normal for your doctor to give these cards to your father, it does not mean that there is something wrong with him 🙂

  4. No, you should not worry at all. I have been bring home those fun little tests ever since turning 40. It is all part of a yearly routine physical examination. This test is a way to test for blood in the feces. It is all very routine…do not worry about you dad.
