Meditation to reveal our unconditioned nature?

In meditation, if we discard all thoughts images words feelings and keep discarding no matter how long it takes until we perceive of nothing– is that the point where true Self meets or reveals itself?


  1. How can you consciously recognize the true self if you’ve emptied your mind of conscious though? I always figured that the true self is what would exist without limits such as social mores or insecurities. Maybe I’m looking at this wrong.

  2. I meditate after each krya in Yoga. What happens to me is I literally relax in deep relaxation, at the end of a grueling set. Laying there in dead pose, with hands open to the side, palms facing up, eyes closed, while getting a gong bath, I leave myself open to the world, to possibilities, to what may come.
    I experience all kinds of things. At times it is serenity, and other times tears fall down my cheeks uncontrollably. I feel my feelings, I feel the breath, I feel the energy circulating through my body. I breathe through them all – good and bad. Then, I feel a release – whether I cried or not, a catharsis. That’s what allows me to see my true self, from inside out and come to accept it as it is, tears, peace and all.
    I couldn’t meditate if I didn’t work out. And the work out is not easy even though it may look like it is. Meditation though is about acceptance, not so much nirvana and levitation. 😉

  3. Right. Meditation is meditation when finally there is no one meditating. There is only bright present awareness – no agenda. This bright present awareness is not IN the mind. The mind, now finally still and quiet, is found to be in IT, in this awareness. This is the True Self that has recognized or realized, the True Self. It has been here all along. Through consciousness which has become misidentified with the contents of mind, the world, the senses, language, time and space – True Self has found exactly the pleasure and pain, that consciousness has served up to it. Focus on the meditator, not any outside object. The True self will reveal itself, in empty stillness and silence as not other than us. Now, much better informed, consciousness does the rest.
    J Krishnamurti (Meditations 1969) leaves us with poetic descriptions of when the Self encounters the Self as: “Loves stillness in persuit when the mind is washed empty.”
    Nisargadatta tells us that the only practice is to find out what we are not.

  4. Hi — the difficulty with your question is the phrase, “if we discard…” Who is this “we” who
    is doing the discarding? It is just another part of the mind, which is the source of thoughts.
    In meditation, one simply brings awareness to whatsoever is, with no desire for any particular state of mind. No desire for nothingness or bliss or Nirvana or No-Self. One simply watches. Is a thought there? Good — watch the thought. Is a feeling there? Good.
    Over time, much will be revealed. But *you* cannot do anything to make it happen.
