Meditation: Difference Buddhist and Non-Buddhist?





So I am relatively new to Buddhist Philosophy, have been to a few meditation classes and read about 3 books.
At the moment, I am reading Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now.
Everything I have come across in all these books, meditations and videos have been such an inspiration to get deeper into spirituality.
A lot of Eckhart Tolle comes back in Buddhism, but obviously there is a difference between New Age and Buddhism in approach to the path for spiritual enlightenment.
It is all a bit confusing, but at the moment I feel more connected with Eckhart Tolle’s approach and would like to get deeper into his work. Obviously, meditation is a big part of spirituality. Here is where the confusion comes up: What is the difference between Buddhist meditation and Non-Buddhist meditation. Say if I continue my Buddhist meditation classes, would this agree with Eckhart Tolle’s view?
Or even better: Can anyone tell me a perfect Companion Meditation CD to Eckhart Tolle?


  1. meditation is meditation. It is the state where the mind silently contemplates itself.
    There are thousands of mental exercises but only one state where the mind comes into reality. It is like being in or out of the ocean. There are a lot of things you can do while you are out of the ocean but the ocean is still there and unchanged by it. Once you get into the ocean then you are completely enveloped by it and understand what it is.
    It’s the same with meditation. In the end there is only meditating or not meditating. All the mental exercises are the same compared to that.

  2. I think Tolle is a Buddhist. He is a Buddha. But he is trying to make the teachings appeal to a wider audience.
    Stick with him & you’ll go far, but also look into the Buddhist Path too, in its wider context. The lady / gent above who spoke of Sunnyataa was right. Tolle exemplifies this in practice.
    You are doing the right things. Keep walking & take heart! : )

  3. Buddha said “Be a light unto yourself.” You are the one who must determine the truth. It’s no one’s job but yours.
    You can tell from my user name that I like Tolle, but I don’t think you need to choose one. Tolle speaks to us clearly because he was born in this century. But I think Buddha saw further.
    The whole universe conspires to teach us. We’re surrounded by teachers.

    Buddhist meditation is vast and varied. What makes Buddhism Buddhism? The four noble truths and the eightfold path, also the doctrine of emptiness or shunyata. New age versions of Buddhism often take what they find palatable and leave what is difficult to handle. What is most difficult for non-Buddhists is the doctrine of emptiness. Without the doctrine of emptiness you do not have Buddhism. This is the difference between Buddhist and non Buddhist. The doctrine of emptiness is very radical and when truly applied to your life it is fundamentally transformative. In a nutshell it is thus: nothing exists as its own thing. each person place and thing is dependent upon some further thing or circumstance for its existence. so look around your life and note those things which, if they where gone would mean you would be gone. You are dependant upon those things for your existence and are thus but a cog in a greater milieu of dependent entities. Nothing exists of its own accord hence to a Buddhist nothing exists in an absolute manner. Everything is contingent and thus though it is real in respect to everyday living ultimately it is non existent. What you perceive as objects and happenings are dependent fully upon your thinking of them as such. Beyond this you must enter into training as a buddhist to know more or to get more answers but suffice it to say that the last thing which defines a buddhist as buddhist is them having submited to a master. in buddhism there is no other way.

  5. I haven’t read this book. but I am now a Buddhist.
    For me. Buddhists meditation and Non Beddhist meditation have a little difference.
    Meditation makes everyone both peaceful and purify oneself. But Buddhists can go on higher path for escaping all pain from Buddha’s dogmas.
    Non Buddhists can be in Zen but they have only 1/2 purification cos they don’t know its path of enlightment.
    They feel relax but their pain cannot erase, Buddhists can follow this path to avoid pain forever.

  6. All kind of meditations need concentration only. . the more u r absorbed the more u do it better its basically breath controlling exercise which teaches u to control ur reflexes mind and body. Muslims normaly meditate by breathing in deep and long whispering ALLAH (GOD) and breathing out in double of the time by saying HOOOO . . i ve practiced it for some time its amazing try!

  7. instead of reading all those books and asking questions here an in other places and buying cds, just sit quietly for 15 minutes. breath slowly, concentrate on your breath. dont actively think anything… if a thought comes to your mind, notice that it’s there and let it go… just concentrate on your breathing.
    that’s it.
    put a timer to beep at the end of this time so you won’t be constantly lookin at your watch.

  8. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to meditate. It’s very personal. Your best bet would be to find a store that carries spiritual books and cd’s and tell the person there exactly what you’re looking for.

Meditation and Labyrinths
