Machiavelli vs. Lao-tzu?

One of Machiavelli’s most controversial statements is: “A man who wishes to make a vocation of being good at all times will come to ruin among so many who are not good.” How would Lao-tzu respond to this statement? Under what conditions would such a statement become irrelevant?

It’s not controversial.
Lao-tzu would agree.
Would never be irrelevant.

What is a good man?
A teacher of a bad man.
What is a bad man?
A good man’s charge?
Lao Tzu (c.604 – 531 B.C.)

Virtue is its own reward! One person can never be deceived by false actions. The same person exists in the middle of the night, between our ears. To falsifie our self for a bowl of rice is to devalue what we are. We alone know we are worthless, even if bad men think we are not! To be ruined by the definition of any criterion set by bad men is irrelevant. To be top fake is still fake.

Charles Glieb

There is no such thing as good or bad people. All people do good as they see it.

and evil will have no power.
Not that it isn’t there,
but you’ll be able to step out of its way.
Give evil nothing to oppose
and it will disappear by itself.
