It depends what the knowledge is used for?

i would think the socratic view would be more correctly expressed
knowledge properly applied is virtue…
as knowledge properly applied shows wisdom
and that one knows self and ones relationship thus
of self to all whatever one has to deal with in life
and i dont know if socrates gives this view point
but attunement of self to the whole of being
is by virtue:) of
considering the needs of others before ones own

I know next to nothing about Socrates. I know his friends used to camp out to see how long it would take him to move again, once he had stopped dead to solve some silly problem.
The other thing I know about him was that he was found guilty of corrupting the youth with his ideas, so he was ordered to execute himself by drinking hemlock- which, like a good ole boy, he went and duly did (with the same useless friends camped out watching him do it!)
Life has to be more important than knowledge. I have to believe that- otherwise in Heaven, Josef Mengele will be a next door neighbour to Mother Teresa and Mahatma Ghandi.

I would say that Socrates is correct in the way that Socrates, himself, would have believed himself correct. Socrates was often concerned with the truth of ideals, rather than the meanings of words. In other words: a word represents an ideal that ideal has a specific truth, but the word itself can have more than one meaning. So to define the sentence “Knowledge is virtue,” by the truth of the ideal he is saying that “knowledge” or possessing that knowledge truly is a marker of true “virtue,” or that it is virtuous simply to have knowledge. However, when a discriminating eye looks at the statement “Knowledge is virtue,” especially under the influence of the society we now live, one attempts to define the meanings of the words. That is to say, that humans, in this day and age, define that statement meaning that a learned person is a person of virtue.
The first instinct is to attempt to disprove that meaning, which is easy. The argument to be made in Socrates’ favor is that the definition of the statement belies the truth of the ideal. The fault here is that if you substitute the meaning of knowledge:”any knowledge” with the ideal of knowledge:”all knowledge” you may begin to see that the path of virtue is through true knowledge.

Solly

the Nazis were among the most knowledgeable people ever. can anyone same call them virtuous?
knowledge is power. power is potential, neither good nor bad until used.

Not necessarily.
Knowledge is a prerequisite to practice virtue,
but the will to do so is still required.
Socrates might have been just a bit naive in supposing that
just because one had the knowledge to see the long term benefit in practicing virtue
one would always have the wisdom to forgo the short term advantages in doing otherwise.

Here is some Bibical insight to the word “knowledge”
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 then verse 22 says:
22 “ How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
For scorners delight in their scorning,
And fools hate knowledge.
So based on the Bible Socrates is right!
