Is there evidence to support the theory that consciousness survives death?

You know what I mean. Someone dies, and they retain experiences they’ve had through life after they have died. It may go with the belief in ghosts…they leave a residual consciousness. What do you think?

hell no.

No Creampie without Jesus

That’s not a theory…theories attempt to explain observable evidence. That is a philosophy with no supporting evidence.

harmonograph

No.

Steve R

No evidence whatsoever. None.

Rod

No.

Super Atheist to the Rescue

No.

Dennis

None whatsoever, but that won’t stop some people demanding proof that there no evidence.

As an atheist physicist. I will shock you by saying that I do believe there is some evidence but I will need a while to explain.
1. We are not the brain we are the algorithm the brain performs. If you substituted every atom in your brain you would not notice a change. Nor do I believe if you transported yourself one yard in a given direction would you notice a change (other than the change in location). Nor do I believe if you instantly terminated yourself and instantly created an exact copy one yard away do I believe you would notice anything other than the change in location. The distance here is obviously arbitrary it shouldn’t matter if it is 1 yard or 100^100^100^100 light years, or in another universe altogether. The brain algorithm has no way of determining how many ( or which) brains it is operating on.
2. I believe there is significant evidence for an infinite multiverse to be found in quantum mechanics. This evidence comes from several sources. One source of evidence we call the anthropic principle which explains why we observe a universe conducive to life. One is the nature of quantum mechanics itself. The simplest interpretation of quantum mechanics is the many worlds interpretation. Another is that the mathematical models such as string theory we commonly use for reality demand it.
3. In a sufficiently random infinite multiverse there is a likelihood that there are an infinite number of exact copies of your brain. This is essentially just the pigeon hole principle. As events occur to those brains some of those the brain algorithms split and become distinct. For instance one brain may observe a coin flip being heads, while another copy may observe a corresponding coin in another reality being tails. As memories are forgotten some of those brain algorithms may merge again.
4. Not all of those identical copies die. Any quantum event would only result in some brains dying and leave others surviving. Your brain algorithm only continues on those which survive. Dead brains don’t perform brain algorithms. As these remaining brains gradually age and approach death. The information content decreases rapidly ( Alzheimer’s for instance) , and the number ( actually mathematical measure since the actual number is infinite ) of matches would therefore increase eventually matching more young (although extremely alien ) brains than old ones and the process would continue in young brains. I would not expect significant memories to be retained at this stage.
That said, ghosts are nothing more than foolish superstition. I do not believe in anything supernatural. Near death experiences are also nonsense and are only evidence of oxygen deprivation and damage to the neural network of our brain.

theories have evidence supporting them. there is no evidence to go with that. so no.

truth seeker

yes
god says it happens
we remember every thing we did

interested1208

Nope..
Only to those who believe in the supernatural…

Even in this life we explain consciousness inadequately. The research into consciousness is still young and inadequately developed. Perhaps, further research in quantum physics. or whatever follows it, will give us more insight in the future.

Izzy_Cool

Hmm, well let’s consider this.
You are made of energy.
Energy cannot be destroyed, only reconfigured.
So, after death your energy is returned to the universe (heaven)
So why would it not be possible?
There’s a lot going on in the universe that we cannot explain, so who knows?

Martin (atheist)

None whatsoever which is why it isn’t even a theory, or a hypothesis, just a unsubstantiated belief.

Tomo

theory you say….. hmmmm

LJR

To date there has never been a shred of evidence offered that was able to withstand sustained scrutiny.without disintegrating into hoax and fantasy.

Theres more storys and experiments of life after death just look them up but heres one

there is just as much proof to show that an alien orphan baby crashlanded on this planet from the destroyed planet krypton, was raised by farmers and travelled to metropolis and is now in metropolis (a major us city that exists but can’t be found on any map or we have never collected any census information from) as a famous reporter and also is a super hero with great stregth can fly and whatnot.
namely- none.
EDIT:
interesting fact- action comics #1 recently sold for one million dollars- has any bible not laden with gold (seperate value) ever sold for that much?

To be, or not to be…
The answer is on the fence between faith and empirical materialism.

Q&A Queen

Absolutely not. And in fact we have scriptural evidence to the contrary, though many rather hold on to their traditions rather than God’s word.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5-6) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for THE DEAD, they ARE CONSCIOUS OF NOTHING AT ALL, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6Â Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.
(Ecclesiastes 9:10) All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She”²ol, the place to which you are going.
You also have Ezekiel 18:4 which tells us that “the soul that is sinning it itself will DIE”. There’s NO immortal soul. That is a pagan myth.
I don’t think it could be any clearer than that.

skeptik

Nope.
Not a speck.

June smiles

I hope it is so, but the consciousness will not be left in this realm, it will accompany the soul/spirit on the continuing journey. At least that is what I hope for.

George McCasland

As a Christian, there’s none, as the soul dies. The demons love to play games and make people think they are someone else. Christ said they can appear as anything, including an angel of light.

Andrew (agnostic)

There is no provable theory we survive death and imo there never will be even if we do. There are some interesting hypothesis, some based on proven science, but they are still just hypothetical – such as the brain being both a traditional computer (for automated functions such as breathing, heart pumping, etc) and a quantum computer (for consciousness)
