Is Theravada Buddhism the original Buddhism that the Buddha taught?

And was Mahayana Buddhism influenced by Chinese religions and as such is a mixture of Buddhism and Chinese religions. So would Theravada be the original Buddhism that has not been mixed with other religions….

Theravada is one of 18 schools that appeared soon after the Master died. It was backed by the ancient governments of the day. It was also intentionality conservative and “by the book”. So yes it is the original Buddhism. But Other types of Buddhism are justifiable when understood through the context of “skillful means”. Mahayana developed in India not China. But the Chinese influenced Mahayana Buddhism greatly. Zen is a sect that is not actually Buddhism but a hybrid of Buddhism and Taoism. Modern forms of Zen are just one big headache, but that was not the original intent. Old… Read more »

Yes, Therevada is the most original form of Buddhism that exists today. It is the teachings of the Buddha (or other wise known as the Dhamma), as they have been recorded in the Pali Canon (created directly after the Buddha passed away, and containing all of the teachings), and thus put into practice. As the Dhamma spread to other regions and cultures, a lot of silly rites and rituals and those sorts of things were added. Yes it is much close then any othe forms of Buddhism , but Buddha never used the word Buddhism but Dhamma.
He taught the Dhamma , the reality of things as they are.

While Theravada is largely considered to be the original form of buddhism there have undoubtedly been changes made over the centuries. Both Mahayana and Theravada have been influenced by the religions and beliefs of the countries to which they spread. This is largely due to the way that Buddhism spread across Asia.As it was spread by people moving around the region and settling,as opposed to people invading and forcing a belief system upon others, locals gradually became interested in these “buddhists”and desired to learn more about them and what they stood for.As more and more people came to embrace this new way they… Read more »

Pre-Sectarian Buddhism is the original Buddhism. Theravada is close to the original teachings of Buddhism and teaches from the Pali canon, which is made up of early Buddhist texts.

So Theravada Buddhism is not exactly what was taught by Gautama (or rather, it’s slightly more than what he taught), but of all forms of Buddhism it is the closest.
