Is the pineal gland the same thing as the hypothalamus?

  1. No. The pineal gland is part of the endocrine system and produces hormones. The hypothalamus is a cluster of cells in the midbrain that are responsible for various sensations such as satiety (fullness), sexual inclinations/arousal, and other “feelings”.

  2. Perhaps you are thinking of the pituitary gland, which is attached by a stalk to the hypothalamus. The pineal is a distance from the pituitary/hypothalamus region, being on the other side of the brainstem.

  3. the pineal gland is part of the hypothalamus. it produces the hormone melatonin, which moderates the diurnal rhythym of sleep. the hypothalamus is not only part of the nervous system, but is also part of the endocrine system. it releases the hormones gonadotropin releasing hormone, growth hormone releasing hormone, thyrotropin releasing hormone, and adrenocorticotropin releasing hormone. these travel straight to the pituitary to stimulate other hormones, which then act on other endocrine organs like adrenals, testes, ovaries, and thyroid.
so the pineal gland is part of the neuroendocrine system and is a part of the hypothalamus.
