Is the difference between atheists and spiritual people?

…Is that spiritual people have had experiences where they dissolved their boundaries and ego. So they no longer identify with the self as much, they see their ‘self’ in all creatures and nature as a whole. The idea of the all in the self and the self in the all. So, the concept of living for the whole of nature would make more sense to a spiritual person. I am talking about true spiritual people, not ones who say one thing than act another.
Where as atheists see themselves as more of an isolated individual separate from the world around them. This seems to be the main world view in the west….either atheism or theistic dualism, both are similar in the sense that the self is seen as separate from the whole the of nature. So the western world view has been based on these ideas of a material self being a separate entity…all aspect of western view….consumer capitalism, imperialism, material reductionism.

I’m an atheist that would consider nature a god if I didn’t know the definition of a god includes “supernatural”. I don’t believe anything is supernatural. But I do basically worship nature and believe I am VERY much a part of this natural world.
That sort of negates your whole rant, at least in my case.

On the contrary, theists and selfishness are almost synonyms.
Why else would they not care about anything else but getting themselves to heaven? (maybe their friends too so they’re not bored?).

i think spiritualism is more about being in touch with ‘your inner-self’ so that means that anybody can be spiritual and they may or may not be religious.

“Is that spiritual people have had experiences where they dissolved their boundaries and ego. So they no longer identify with the self as much, they see their ‘self’ in all creatures and nature as a whole.”
Nicely put. This is the basis of my beliefs.
As for the difference between spiritual people and atheists…I don’t know.

absolutely not – wrong analogy- good try –

Wisdom

—adjective
1. of, pertaining to, or consisting of spirit; incorporeal.
2. of or pertaining to the spirit or soul
Atheists don’t believe in a soul or spirit, nor a deity.
If you believe in a spirit, I don’t see why you don’t believe in a designer for that spirit; but whatever.
That’s kind of like saying I believe in the God of the bible, but I don’t believe the bible.

lol I’m a spiritual atheist. I simply don’t believe in gods is what makes me an atheist. You can’t really define people so simply. It’s impossible. Someone always gets shorted. You are a spiritual person. Imagine yourself as you are, but not believing in any gods at the same time. That’s me!

Daydream Believer La Bandita

Um… sorry but I do not believe in any God, yet I’d describe myself as you have in your first paragraph. Some atheists ARE very spiritual believe it or not.

I'm going in

Your philosophy has some merits. However, the bone of contention lies on the validity of the competing beliefs. For an atheist, himself is greater than the whole humanity and therefore deny the existence of a Deity. This denial is born out of love to sin–transgression of the Biblical laws and the Lords many commandments. Polygamy and heterosexuality is one.
On the other hand, Christians or spiritual people embraced the divine and the total surender of the self in what atheist call “blind faith”–it is actually a freedom of the ego thru self-sacrifice. This is similar to Indian self-emolation or burning of the self and the Muslim Jihad or religious war. Divinity is second level type of existence. Whereas, materialism is stone-age self-preservation.

ex nihilo

I can tell you’re intelligent, and on the right track with these questions. I think reading about the philosophy of “worldview” would help solve a lot of these questions. There’s a book by James Sire called “Naming the Elephant” that I’d recommend to you. You’re thinking of the idea of “self” would be helped by researching either atheistic OR theistic existentialism.
Every person, theist/atheist, still lives by faith in something, that is, they make basic assumption founded on the presuppositional beliefs that provide the foundation to their worldview. These presuppositions are usually go unexamined, and remain mere assumptions. Considering questions of ultimate origin, ethical systems, theory of knowledge, meaning of love, existence of beauty, etc., are basic philosophical/theological questions that are usually unexamined and hence the beliefs are assumed.

You seem to have it all figured out and everyone in the correct box. According to you if you are spiritual you believe in everything and nothing at all. Ok by that definition I as an atheist am spirtitual.
As an atheist I am also an naturalist. I believe I am one with all things. I am and know nothing. I am no greater than a speck of dust and no less than a star or planet. There is no higher or lower powers. Seems like I just don’t fit in to you nice clean box that was prepared for me.
Anytime you attempt to label everyone or anything as absolute you miss the mark of knowing truth. If you say you know you do not know.
When you say the word spirit or spiritual you have already lost it’s meaning. Please do not try to explain the unexplainable it only reveals your lack of understanding.

Sew What?

Sweetie, I really don’t want to be rude but I must be blunt.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Many atheists are spiritual people. Most atheists understand that they are part of nature.
Your notion that the main worldview in Western culture is rugged individualism is pretty much on target. That’s why so many folks like to move to the United States. It offers freedom and opportunities for all individuals to pursue their dreams. Have you watched any television lately? We just keep getting better at it.
