Dalai Lama is viewed as the reincarnation of Avalokitesvara–the bodhisattva of compassion. Avalokitesavara is the most popular of Mahayana Buddhist deities. He is the earthly manifestation of Amitabha, guarding the world between the departure of the historical Buddha, Gautama, and the appearance of the future Buddha, Maitreya. He is the creator of the fourth world, the actual living universe. In China and Japan his gender became ambiguous; he is sometimes called a goddess. That would be real irony wouldn’t it, since the current Dalai Lama believes the Bible just might be the real Word of God! No offense. He really seems to be a great person, with a gifted mind. He did say it, though, so he’s really pretty cool in my book.

I see from reading the responses here that there is a misunderstanding in regards to the Buddha and the Dalai Lama.
There have been many Buddhas, Siddhartha being the latest in our eon to become enlightened and teach.
Siddhartha and the Dalai Lama are not the same.
HH is the emination of Avaloketashvra, the Tibetan Buddha of Compassion. Not of Siddhartha, who was an Indian prince.
HH has, however, stated firmly that he is nothing more than a simple monk.

If he is, then the Buddha wasn’t really a Buddha.

The term, Buddha, refers to anyone that has achieved nirvana. If someone achieves nirvana, they cease reincarnating.

No

Only two humans in history have reached Nirvana:

1. Buddha
2. Dalai Lama – the D Lama decided to return to Earth and educate humans as oppose to entering Nirvana
