I posted a survey on here a week ago and I did not know that the survey would be removed within a certain amount of time. The people that answers had very insightful answers and comments. So, I was wondering if people could add comments and answer the survey again. I understand that the survey does slant towards a bias; however, my hypothesis is that media is causing religion to lose its influence over society. My hypothesis can be proven wrong, and that is what I am trying to find out.

I know the questionnaire is long, but please take a moment to answer and had comments. Last week when I posted this, I had a few people comment on the last question. And yes, Satanism and Atheism is a religion; I do not need a history of these please. People believe that Atheism means not believing in organized religion. But by not believing, you are actually still believing because you are acknowledging that there is something out there, but that you do not believe in it. If you disagree, that is fine, but please just answer the survey and then had comments on wither or not you believe mass media is causing religion to lose its influence.

    4. c – I don’t watch television or listen to the radio enough to really say.
    5. c – I don’t necessarily think it causes people to “switch” religions, but, to some extent, I think it does encourage some people to learn about religions differing from their own and explore their beliefs more than they would have otherwise. In my opinion, this is more of a result of the simplicity of gaining information through the Internet and such. Also, we can now communicate with people all around the world, adding to the diversity of people you’re likely to communicate and befriend while online, who are bound to have beliefs differing from your own. Because of this, people are becoming more open-minded about other religions and educating themselves better on the beliefs of others (which is a very good thing, in my opinion).
    6. d – In this sense, I don’t really see how the two are connected. In my personal experience, whatever I happen to watch on television or whatever music I listen to, etc., doesn’t affect my religious beliefs at all (although my religious beliefs do, to some extent, influence some of the music I listen to). The two are very separate, at least to me. I suppose I do see how some people could become obsessed with television or the Internet or something of the sort and completely neglect other areas of their life, including religion, but I don’t think that would be that common.
    7. c – In some cases, I suppose.
    8. b – Different people will practice religion in different ways. How one person prefers to do so will always differ from how someone else does. I don’t think you necessarily need to follow any preset list of rules or anything like that to practice a religion.

    4. Too much influence of Christianity in US still and not enough other religions and atheism represented accurately.
    5. Radio/Music probably influences people to explore other beliefs most or at least gets them to music forums or other places on the Internet (like music websites or videos where other “minority” religions may be discussed (or even pushed or spammed) I have seen this in several places. Celebrities switching religion may have a little impact I don’t know cause few people I ever ran across thought that all the hype about celebrities was cool. Though a celebrity switching to something like any of the pagan religions or Satanism/Luciferianism would probably have a huge impact since these seem to be the religions that attract young people these days (and it would give them an excuse to Christian friends and family to explore them if asked about it) at least from what I have seen. Radio programs, music, and documentaries about these “minority” religions have the biggest impact.
    6. Its not ruining religion or the aura of religion its promoting a more open dialogue about it thats good especially the Internet and sites like Yahoo answers.
    7. Sometimes it just depends on the followers and leader of the Church, Temple, Group etc.
    8. Actually mainstream religion is promoted too much by the media I think we need a more open and accurate dialogue on TV/Radio about “minority” religions and non belief. The Internet is fine and much more free and open. Mainstream media is way to controlled.
    9. I am a Satanist (Spiritual beliefs http://www.joyofsatan.org is a website about my beliefs)

    4b. Negatively, by and large.
5c. News coverage has a drip-drip effect on established religions and TV and the cinema are undoubtedly instrumental in causing people to open up to alternative ideas (you mentioned the Matrix, also Avatar, the whole Dan Brown thing and dare I say it, Twilight, for example)
    6. If some religions are having problems and losing adherents to other religions, they themselves are entirely to blame for their own vicissitudes.
    7. No, I don’t. Religions may attempt to use the media, however. And the media does offer opportunities to make money for those who are already commercially minded.
8b. No, I think to practise a religion you do not need a building to do it in.
    9h. Wiccan, eclectic neo-Pagan
