No, Hubbard was a businessman. He started his “religion” because he could make more money than he would as a writer of science fiction.

Seems they both pulled religions out of their ass, and got a load of people to follow them out into the middle of nowhere.
Hubbard, I would seem had the benefit of experience, as his cult grew much faster and made much more money, and got people to believe even more radical things.
