Is consciousness the Universe's way of getting to know itself?

I think Carl Sagan said something like that, but it really blows me away to think about how we are, in fact, a piece of the Universe itself and how, in a very real way, we provide the conduit through which it’s own existence is actualized.

  1. That is one of the only truths that appear to be self-evident…when all the evidence is considered, anyways. It is the only reasonable conclusion one can come to.

We are the observer…as is God…The Universe…The All…Or The Supreme consciousness which creates and binds all that is…whatever you happen to want to call it.

  2. Whoa!
In my pot-smoking days, this one would have thrown me for a week-long loop.
I don’t have an answer, I just wanted to throw that out there.

  3. Do you mean “self-awareness”? I don’t see how the Universe could be a factor here. What of other life forms here ? Why haven’t they also become self-aware, and advanced to equal us given that they have had the same time frame (and many even more) to evolve ? Sagan didn’t have all the answers, and many theories that don’t hold up to scrutiny.

  4. I think that’s a plausible way to explain what’s going on. I’m a big fan of Carl Sagan precisely because he was able to use poetic language without going beyond what is scientifically valid. We are, after all, a part of the Universe, and therefore we are part of the consciousness of the Universe. However, there is nothing whatever to suggest we are the only consciousness of the Universe.

  5. Carl Sagan would certainly know best about his own sayings and, what he has said here, appears to be deeply meaningful. This saying, by extrapolation, should be applicable to all forms of consciousness, the sum total (or union) of all of which, should constitute the “universal consciousness!”
