how many minutes does it take for an altered state of consciousness to be achieved by massage therapy?

  1. Hmmm…. I don’t know if you can call it altered state of consciousness…that sounds a bit too drastic…like drug enduced. Endorphins are the ones that cause that relaxation and “altered state of consciousness” effect. It depends on each person. As a chair massage therapist, I’ve noticed that take effect after about 10-15 minutes on most people. There are some people that will need a bit longer because they might not be comfortable in whatever position they’re in, they guard against the pressure, they realize they don’t like the MT’s technique or whatever… It is different for most people. For me however, I can totally relax in about 10 minutes. I had a 90 min massage once and that was totally amazing. I needed 15 minutes after the massage to wake up!

  2. It is different for each person. Some don’t reach any altered state at all. It depends on what type of massage is being done and it’s intention.

  3. On average it takes my clients about twenty minutes. But if I’m doing cranial sacral work then it only takes a few minutes. Sometimes they don’t at all. I hope that helps, and good luck!
